Week 8 Challenge- Concepts of Structural Engineering
1) Check whether the truss given below is stable or not. Explain with a reason
Ans :-
Here m=12, j=9 and r=6
m=2j-r which is 12=12
so LHS equal to RHS
hence the above structure is stable structure which is rigid structure.
2) How is the degree of indeterminacy is calculated in
a) Beams and Frames -
degree of indeterminacy = no. of reactions + no. of independent processes - no. of static equllubrium
b) Truss -
for plane truss is m-(2j - 3).
3) Calculate the degree of indeterminacy in the frame shown below
Ans :- We will find degree of indeterminact by dividing frame in two parts, so
degree of indeterminacy = no. of reactions + no. of independent processes - no. of static equllubrium
degree of indeterminacy = (3+6-3)+(3+0-3) = 6
4) Give examples for
i) Simple truss - triangular frame like bicycle.
ii) Compound truss - long-span bridges.
iii) complex truss - complicated framework in such sense that method of joints and sections dont help in analysing the structure.
5) Solve for Bending Moment and shear force for the following load condition
a)

Va = 11.44 KN and Vb = 7.56 KN
b)

shear force at C=15KN, at B=30KN and at A=45KN.
