Week 8 - Challenge 6 - Core & Cavity Design

AIM

Create the Core and cavity blocks for the switch bezel designed in the earlier challenge.

Requirements

Class A Surface

Class A surface is a outer styling surface on which design engineer starts designing components.

Class B Surface

This surface is created by offsetting the Class A surface. The offset value is equal to the thickness of the component. On this surafce all the engineering features are provided.

Class C Surafce

The surface joining Class A and Class B in the tooling direction is known as Class C surface.

Parting Surface

during Injection molding, two halves, ie fixed and moving, are pressed tightly and form a sealed hollow to avoid the melt flow leakage and maintain certain holding pressure, the pressed surface are called parting surface, usually parting surface are the biggest projection outline of the part. Parting surface design directly affects the product quality, ease of construction and operation of the Injection mold, the mold design is one of the key factors to success.

Parting Line

A parting line is the border line in which draft angles change direction. Parting line in the mould or product divides the two half, i.e; the core and the cavity of a molded part. It is sometimes a starting point for the mold parting surface.

Core and Cavity Block

Cavity and core are used in the injection molding process, where the concave part of the mold or the female part which forms external shape of molding is the cavity.
And the convex part or the male part which forms the internal shape of molding is the core.

Tooling Axis

Tooling axis is a direction in which core and cavity opens and closes. Draft angle is provided with respect to the tooling axis. While creating mold component from Class-A surface, we need to decide the tooling direction. It can be decided by visual inspection, deciding complex surfaces and bisecting method.

CORE DESIGN

  • Core - A portion of the mold that goes inside a cavity to form the interior of a hollow part.
  • Core-cavity - A term used to describe a mold created by mating A-side and B-side mold halves.

CAVITY DESIGN

  • A mold is a hollow form typically made from stainless steel that has plastic injected into it to manufacture a plastic part.
  • The plastic is inserted into the mold cavity, which is a hole in the mold shaped like the desired part.
