Week 8 - Challenge 1 - Draft Analysis on a Fan Cover

Challenge1 - Draft analysis on a fan cover :

Aim :

To create the tooling axis for the given fan cover model meeting the requirements of the draft angle and perform the draft analysis of the model.

Creating axis using Insert -> Axis.

step1 :

Intially the fan cover part was downloaded and opened in the catia software and boundaries are created from the given CATpart to verify all the faces are joined together. Then intersecting lines are generated along X-axis.

step2 :

Dummy axis is created inorder to verfy the side faces of the fan cover is inclined at an angle. This dummy axis represents the tooling axis for the given CATpart. (Tooling Axis - The direction in which the core and cavity of the mould moves. This axis will be used in the industry for production).

Then lines are created in the drafting faces of the part. This line will be helpful for creating Axis line in the direction of the axis in which the intersecting lines are generated.

step3 :

Bisecting line is created by selecting the two lines drawn along the drafted surface, which is considered as the first tooling axis line along X- direction . This line is renamed as X Directional Tooling axis for our reference.

step4 :

New intersecting lines for the cat part is generated along the y direction. Then lines are drawn on the side drafted face. Now, new bisecting line is generated in reference to the drafted lines on the side faces and is renamed as Y Directional Tooling axis.

step5 :

Tooling axis is created with the help of the generated bisecting lines. This tooling axis determines the directional movement of core and cavity of the mould. In the given CATpart the tooling axis is along the z axis according the part.

step6 :

Draft analysis is done after creating the tooling axis. This analysis will help us to find the draft angle for the side faces which is 9 deg (approx). Basically draft angle should be above 3 deg according to the industrial norms.

step7 :

Publishing-CATpart and the generated Tooling axis are published for ease of acces.

Draft :

Draft is providing angle (or) tapers on product features such as walls, ribs, ports, bases that lie parallel to the direction of release from the mold eases part ejection.

Draft angle :

Draft angle is the face angle to the part in which the mold is created to ease the production. Basically draft angle should be more that 3 deg according to industrial norms, any prats with draft angle less than 3 deg is sent back to the design department for further update in part .Which, determines the production rate, wear and tear of moulds.

The characteristic elements are:

  • pulling direction: this direction corresponds to the reference from which the draft faces are defined.
  • draft angle : this is the angle that the draft faces make with the pulling direction. This angle value defined applies to all selected faces (several draft angle values cannot be created in one draft feature).
  • parting element : this plane, face or surface cuts the part in two and each portion is drafted according to its previously defined direction.
  • neutral element : this element defines a neutral curve on which the drafted face will lie. This element will remain the same during the draft. The neutral element and parting element may be the same element.
  • Propagation can be set to:

None: there is no propagation

Smooth: the application integrates the faces propagated in tangency onto the neutral face to define the neutral element

Tooling axis :

Tooling axis determines the directional movements of the core and cavity of the moulds. Tooling axis is generate depending on the part draft angle.
