Week 7-Long Piston With Cam
Objective: To perform a transient analysis on a piston and cam mechanism model and do the analysis with Frictionless contact, Frictional with 0.1 and 0.2 as the frictional contact for a total of 3 cases.
Calculate Equivalent Stress, Directional Deformation and Equivalent Elastic Strain and compare them for all the three cases
Setup:
Engineering data:
Structural steel material
Geometry:
- exported file of Long_piston_cam.x_t
Model:
Geometry: Renamed as Barrel, Barrel_Cam, Cam follower. Stiffness behaviour: rigid for Barrel, Barrel_Cam.
Coordinate system: no change
Connections:
Contacts:
- frictional- Cam follower to Barrel, COF: 0
- Frictional- Cam follower to Barrel cam, COF: 0
Joints:
- Fixed- ground to Barrel
- Revolute- ground to Barrel cam
- Translational- Barrel to Cam follower (body to body)
Mesh:
- Face sizing: 3mm mesh to 7 faces in contact where analysis is important.
- Use adaptive sizing: No.
Static structural:
- Analysis setting:
For first step:
- Number of steps =9
- Current step number= 1
- Auto time stepping= on
- Large deflection: on
- Output controls: All yes, Contact miscellaneous: no

For remaining steps:
- Number of steps =9
- Current step number= multi step
- Auto time stepping= on
- Minimum time step= 5.e-002 s
- Maximum time step = 0.3 s
- Large deflection: on
- Output controls: All yes, Contact miscellaneous: no

- Joint-Rotation: Revolute- ground to barrel cam
Solution:
Case: 1 Frictionless
Coefficient of friction: 0
1) Directional Deformation

2) Equivalent Elastic Strain

3) Equivalent Stress

For remaining Cases using parameter Set
Case: 2 Frictional
Coefficient of friction: 0.1
Case: 3 Frictional
Coefficient of friction: 0.2
