Week 7:- Base Unit Design Challenges 1

#1_Base Unit:

Base unit is the unit where all the other units are mounted along with necessary tools like the trunking cable path, pneumatic valve box, etc.

Various components in a Base Unit are:

  • Floor Plate
  • Weld Bars
  • Pneumatic Valve box
  • Eye Bolt
  • Measuring Hole Cover
  • Trunking Channel
  • Pedestial
  • Base Plate.

#2_While Designing a Base Unit we need to follow below points:

  1. A base plate should cover all the units with its outer periphery including opening.
  2. A Base plate is preferred to be designed with respect to BCS Coordinates.
  3. A base plate should be drilled with datum holes/ measuring holes in line with a pitch of 1000mm in general.
  4. Number of datum holes depends upon the size of the base plate.
  5. Datum holes should be drilled at nominal of coordinates, and in terms of 50 and 100.
  6. Datum holes should be drilled 100mm away from other units.
  7. Datum holes should be covered with cover holes.

#3_Dump Unit:

A Dump Unit is a unit in which an assembly of other units like pin unit, rest unit, clamp unit etc is mounted on a large bore cylinder, sufficient enough to validate the total load due to various units.

#4_While Designing a Dump Unit we need to follow below points:

  1. Dump Unit need not necessarily to be used in fixture design, it depends on the conditions & various constraints.
  2. Dump Cylinder validation must be done as per the total weight mounted on the cylinder
  3. Shock absorbers must be implemented to avoid vibrations.
  4. Proper opening & closing of dump unit must be checked.
  5. Frame mounting the dump unit should have strength to bear different static & dynamic loads.

#5_Slide unit:

A Slide Unit is a unit in which an assembly of other units like pin unit, rest unit, clamp unit etc is mounted on a sliding mechanism, with the help of cylinders.

#6_While Designing a Slide Unit we need to follow below points:

  1. Slide Unit need not necessarily to be used in fixture design, it depends on the conditions & various constraints.
  2. Slide Cylinder validation must be done as per the total weight & force exerting on the cylinder.
  3. Shock absorbers must be implemented to avoid vibrations.
  4. Proper opening & closing of Slide unit must be checked.
  5. Sensors should also be provided to ensure the position of slide unit, in automation.
  6. Mechanical Stoppers need to be provided for positioning.
  7. Sliding mechanism can be formed through various means, such as, LM-rail & guide, ball screw, manual, cylinders, motors etc.
