Week- 6 - Solid meshing
Week- 6 - Solid meshing
Aim-
To mesh the given rearview mirror component in both 2D and 3D, after checking the model for geometrical errors and fixing them. Also, to ensure the generated mesh follows the given quality criteria.
Quality criteria-
Shell Elements
S.No | Quality Criteria | Value |
1 | Target/Average length | 1 |
2 | Minimum Length | 0.5 |
3 | Maximum Length | 2 |
Solid Elements
Only one requirement: Tet Collapse should be a maximum of 0.2 for all solid elements.
Given component:-

Shell meshing Procedure on ANSA:-
• Use the topo tool to manage single cons and ensure no free edges.
• Conduct a geometry check and fix all abnormalities before meshing.

• Orient the model using the Faces > Orient tool.
• Assign mesh properties and quality parameters, including target length.

• Adjust the target length to 1 for finer cons resolution.
• Assign parameters by accessing mesh parameters and quality criteria.
• Modify regions with boundaries (cons) to ensure favorable mesh and no failure for any criteria.

• Use the spot mesh tool for flat regions and tria mesh for complex regions.

• Reconstruct the mesh using Shell Mesh > Reconstruction after each mesh iteration.

Shell mesh without errors

• Assign volumes manually to each set of closed-shell elements.

• Use the PID selection tool to select the entire volume.
• Middle-click for software to recognize the volume.
Solid Meshing Process:-
• Volumes are remeshed using tetra rapid or tetra FEM algorithms to generate solid mesh elements.
• Solid elements are checked for tet collapse failures in hidden mode.
• The Fix Quality tool from the volume mesh module can fix failing elements, but may result in protrusions or depressions.
• Final model images are shown with solid meshing and internal mesh elements.

In summary:-
In order to build the solid mesh, the given component was manually fixed and meshing according to the specified requirements and criteria was done using the obtained shell mesh. Care was taken to make sure there were no surface deformations of any kind, and quality and flow were attained.
Outcome of the challenge:-
I learned several tools for solid meshing.
Learned how to assign volumes to closed shell element regions.
I learned how to fix tet collapse failures.
Get to know the ortho tria and tria mesh types with the spot mesh tool.
