Week 6 - Creating connection for Rear door

Question:

For the given Rear door FE model, Create and Apply different PIDs for different components. Write a detailed report on why you choose a certain type of element for connecting certain parts of the door.

Solution:

Fig1.1: Model of rear side door for which we need to make connections.

The door model consists of various parts and components that needs to be connected in order to validate it for the NVH testing so we can get the approximate results.

Fig1.2: Assigning the properties to the various components and parts of the rear side door.

The model provided is the FEA model so we need to assign the properties to the various (FEA modeled) parts and components of the side door. So our task of assigning the connections for two different components becomes easy and convinient.

Fig1.3: Made a connection using two Clusters of RBE2 elements.

RBE2 elements are used to rigidize the each node of the elements of two holes of two different part IDs.

Fig1.4: Made a connection using single Cluster of RBE2 elements.

RBE2 elements are used to rigidize the each node of the elements of a hole.

Fig1.5: Made a connection using three Clusters of RBE2 elements and bolt in-between.

RBE2 elements are used to rigidize the each node of the elements of three holes of three different part IDs and a bolt between them.

Select FEA Rep type as 'BOLT'.

Fig1.6: Made a connection using three Clusters of RBE2 elements and bolt in-between.

RBE2 elements are used to rigidize the each node of the elements of three holes of three different part IDs and a bolt between them.

Select FEA Rep type as 'BOLT'.

Fig1.7: Made a connection using two Clusters of RBE2 elements and bolt in-between.

For hinge, we require two bolt connections with one rotational element (Two node RBE2) inbetween them.

Select FEA Rep type as 'BOLT'.

The DOFs of 'Two node RBE2' element is released in Z-axis for it's rotational movement.

For hinge, we require bolt connections with one rotational element (Two node RBE2) inbetween them.

Select FEA Rep type as 'BOLT'.

The DOFs of 'Two node RBE2' element is released in Z-axis for it's rotational movement.

Fig1.10: Made a 'seam weld' connection between two parts.

Select connection type as 'Seam line'.

Select FEA Rep type as 'Overlap-Shell'.

Fig1.11: Made a 'seam weld' connection between two parts.

Select connection type as 'Seam line'.

Select FEA Rep type as 'Overlap-Shell'.

Fig1.12: Made a 'spot weld' connection between two parts.

Select connection type as 'Spot weld'.

Select FEA Rep type as 'RBE3-HEXA-RBE3'.

Fig1.13: Made a 'spot weld' connection between two parts.

Select connection type as 'Spot weld'.

Select FEA Rep type as 'RBE3-HEXA-RBE3'.

Fig1.14: Made a connection using two clusters of RBE2 elements for door handle and assigning the 'Multi node' RBE2 element in-between them to assign the mass.

Fig1.15: Assigning the mass of 100 grams to the middle node of the 'Multi node' RBE2 element.

Fig1.16: Made a connection using series of 'RBE3-CBUSH-RBE3' elements for glasses of the windows of door.

Since the window consists of the weather sealings we must create connections which will rigidize and provide the cushioning effect, thus selecting the 'CBUSH' type of connection.

Learning outcomes:

  • We learnt and practiced, How to create connections for any automobile subsystem.
  • To obtain the best type of connectionssuch as Bolt connection, Seam weld, Spot weld and Sealings between the different parts of the subsystem.
  • To prepare the deck model of the given component as per the quality requirements and standards of the industry.

Conclusion:

We studied and practiced the preparation of the deck model by using different types of connections, as per the quality requirements of the automotive components.
