Week 6:- Clamp Unit & Pin-Clamp Unit Design Challenge

INTRODUCTION

Design 3 Different types of Swivel Clamp Unit and 1 pin clamp unit to fix in fixed position . This project is done with respect to 3-2-1 principle consider clmap force to be imposed on panel according to tunkers

types of clamp unit

1.Stap clamps

2.Scew clamps

3.Swing clamps

4.Hook clamps

5.Cam-action clamps

6.Wedge clamps

7.Toggle-Action Clamps

8.Power clamps

3-2-1 Principle of Location used in Fixtures:

[1] It is also known as a six-pin or six-point location principle. In this, the three adjacent locating surfaces of the blank (workpiece) are resting against 3, 2, and 1 pin respectively, which prevent 9 degrees of freedom.

[2] The rest three degrees of freedom are arrested by three external forces usually provided directly by clamping.

The 3-2-1 principle states that the six locators are sufficient to restrict the required degree of freedom of any workpiece. In this, motion is restricted using clamps and locators. A three-pin base can restrict five motions and six pins restrict nine motions.

[1] The workpiece is resting on three pins A, B, and C which are inserted in the base of the fixed body.
[2] The workpiece cannot rotate about the axes XX and YY and also cannot move downward.
[3] In this way, the five degrees of freedom 1,2,3,4 and 5 have been arrested.
[4] Two pins D and E are inserted in the fixed body, in a plane perpendicular to the plane containing pins A, B & C.
[5] Now the workpiece cannot rotate about the Z-axis and also it cannot move towards the left.
[6] Hence the addition of pins D and E restrict three more degrees of freedom, namely 6, 7, and 8.
[7] Another pin F in the second vertical face of the fixed body, arrests degree of freedom 9.

A workpiece will be completely confined when blanked against:

  • 3 points in one plane: The “3” in 3-2-1 refers to 3 locators (passive fixture elements) on the primary locating/datum surface.
  • 2 points in another plane: The “2” in 3-2-1 refers to 2 locators on the secondary locating/datum surface.
  • 1 point in a third plane: The “1” in 3-2-1 refers to 1 locator on the tertiary locating/datum surface

Swivel Clamp Unit

In clevis clamp unit, swivel type cylinder is used. Pneumatic Cylinder are mechanical devices which use the power of compressed gas to produce a force in a reciprocating linear motion. Like hydraulic cylinders, compressed gas or a fluid forces a piston to move in the desired direction.

A) NC/Mylars/Fingers
Mylars are the component that holds the panel while These are placed from topside & from the bottom side also. The
top side Mylars called Clamping Mylars & the bottom side Mylars called Resting Mylars. Every clamping Mylars
have resting Mylars. It doesn't allow deformation of the part due to welding stresses.

B) Principle locating point (PLP)
These are the points that are used for the accurate location of the part to maintain the geometry of the part. There is
lots of holes on the panel which are not accurate due to stamping operation. The PLP are defined in the drawing. The
positional dimensions or relative dimensions are very precise in stamping & in fixtures also.

C) Risers
Risers are of different types like L-typer rises, Square tube riser Riser is the manufacturing part which gives height to
the assemblies.

D) Blade
Blades are plates mounted on the Other parts like cylinder, arms, etc are mounted on the blade

E) Shims
Shims are little parts having thicknesses of 0.1mm, 0.2mm, 0.5mm, and so on. These will correct for the stackup tolerance, which is reflected in the panel holding component known as All elements of the fixture are given tolerance. The Mylars will either lift up or fall from their designated position due to this tolerance.
The Mylars will leave an indentation or depression on the panel if they fall below the set height.
There will be distortion due to welding stress if the Mylars lift up. To make adjustments to the Mylars We utilise shims to keep the panel in its defined position so it doesn't deform or get any impressions.

F) Hardware
Hardware is like the Hex head bolts, Allen Bolts, Hex nuts, Spring washers, Self-locking nuts

G) Clamp Arm
The clamp arm is the part of the clamp unit which moves an Over clamp arm the Mylars are mounted.

H) Pivot
It is an axis about which the clamp arm will rotate

I) Clamp cylinder

In swivel types cylinder is used. Penumatic cylinder are mechanical devies which use the power of compressed gas to produce a force in a reciprocating linear motion . like hydralic cylinder something force a piston to move in the desired direction.the piston is a disc or cylinder and the piston rod transfers the force it developed to the abject to be moved it most perfer to use because thy are quieter ,cleaner and less space for uid storage.
