Week-6 Challenge: EV Drivetrain
- In electric Vehicle at the
i). Charging section
- Rectifier to convert the mains AC to DC.
- To reduce the voltage level a Chopper is required, then it can fed the battery.
ii). Motor Controller
- If the DC motor is employed then a chopper is required to control the speed of the motor and charge the battery during regenerative braking.
- if an Induction motor is used then it requires a Chopper along with a inverter to convert dc to AC.
In Hybrid Electric Vehicle
The Charging section and Motor section remains the same and along with these, a bi-directional converter(VSC/VSI/CSI) is used for controlling the flow of power.
- Battery power=72V
Rated Armature Voltage=72V
Rated Armature current=400A
Ra=0.5Ω
Kφ=0.7V/s
Chopper Switching frequency=400Hz
EV steady state duty cycle=70%
The given motor is a separately excited motor so,
When duty cycle is 70% the voltage delivered to the motor armature gets reduced to 70% so

- The author have compared the pro’s and con’s of the induction motor with the brushless DC motor , after discussing in brief about the evolutionary implementation of the dc motor to induction motor.
And as a conclusion he told the brushless DC motor will rule the HEV and EV in the near future due to its advantages.
