Week 5 Sphere pressing on a plate

AIM: To simulate the a sphere pressing on a plate in ansys workbench.

Objective:

To simulate a sphere pressing on a plate. Use Structural steel for both sphere and plate but the material of the plate must be Non Linear. Press the sphere onto plate 4mm downwards and retract it. The plastic deformation must be captured.

Procedure:

  • After opening Ansys Workbench, use static structural as the mode of analysis for simulation.
  • Now, add two materials from the engineering data tab in project menu i.e. structural steel and the non linear structural steel.

  • Import the model provided and check the geometry in the Ansys Spaceclaim for any abnormalities.

  • Now, open Ansys Mechanical and give specific names to the components as shown below:

  • After giving names, assign materials as structural steel to ball and structural steel NL to the plate.
  • Since this is a 1/4th of the lower portion of the simulation, create a symmetry as shown in x and z axis:

  • Create a frictional contact with friction of 0.74.

  • Mesh all the components with default element size.

  • Following analysis settings have been used for the simulation with 4 steps:

  • Apply Fixed support to the bottom face as shown.

  • Allowing the displacement of the ball in negative Y direction only for 4 mm in 2 steps and retracting back in positive direction.

  • Insert Directional deformation in y axis, equivalent stress, equivalent elastic strain, equivalent plastic strain.
  • Finally following solutions have been obtained after running the simulation for sphere pressing on a plate.

Max stress of 3408.1 MPa was obtained.

Directional Deformation of 0.326 mm was obtained.

Max equivalent elastic strain for ball was 0.017.

Max equivalent elastic strain for plate was 0.037.

Max equivalent plastic strain of 1.6565 was observed.

Conclusion: Plastic deformation was observed with plastic strain as 1.6565 and max deformation in y direction 0.326mm. This happened due to the non linear structural steel material of the plate.
