Week - 5 - Modelling Spotwelds

AIM:

i.To model connections using spotwelds for the given model using beam and solid elements .

ii.To compare the output of beam and solid elements and run the crash test simulation successfully.

PROCEDURE:

1.First import the given model to the software.

2.Set up the material cards .Here we use MAT ELASTIC for the parts and MAT SPOTWELD for welds and use the properties of steel for values.

3.Then set up the section cards for the parts and welds.Use SECTION SHELL for parts and SECTION BEAM for beam welds and SECTION BEAM for solid welds .

4.Then assign the section and material card to the Part id .

5.Then to create the beam spotwelds use mesh>element generation>Beam>Two node sets>select the nodes.

For solid welds go to element tools>element edit>create>element type>hexa>select the eight nodes.

BEAM WELD

SOLID WELD

6.Now apply the initial velocity.

7.Then create a rigidwall to simulate the crash and record the output.Go to create entitiy and create a rigidwall .

8.Now to define contacts , Automatic single surface has to be created to define the interaction between the two parts and for the welds we create CONTACT TIED SHELL EDGE TO SURFACE card to define the contact keeping the beam elements as slave and the parts as master.

9.Then set the termination time and control energy card to record the hourglass.

10.Then define all the necessary outputs for post processing .

11.Now the solver deck set up is complete and is ready for simulation .

Nodal acceleration (solid)

Nodal acceleration (beam)

Cross sectional force (solid)

Cross sectional force (beam)

Spotweld axial forces(solid)

Spotweld axial forces(beam)

Spotweld shear forces(solid)

Spotweld shear forces(beam)

RESULT:

Thus the given model was connected using spotwelds and the simulation was done.

We can see from the results that the solid welds produce more forces due to its stiffness which can be seen from the data we collected.
