Week 3 - Geometry simplification of an Electronic enclosure assembly

Geometric cleaning of power unit system.

  1. Open the workbench and select the geometry tab option from the left hand menu list.
  2. Open the space claim module and import the power unit CAD model. The geometry is shown below.
  3. The first step of cleaning is to remove the outer enclosure, as we are interested in cleaning the PCB panel, heat sink and other components attached to it.
  4. Removing the bolt as they are not required for thermal analysis.
  5. Now we split the geometry so that every parts become a single components, and it is easy to convert into icepak objects. For performing this operation we first go to split option from design tab, choose the object and then choose the plane for splitting.
  6. Now we split the components which are attached to other geometries in PCB.
  7. Now we split the heat sink from the PCB board by similar way using split command.
  8. Once splitting is performed we move on to workbench tab and select the identify object option to convert CAD objects to icepak geometries.
  9. The converted icepak objects are shown below.
  10. Now we convert rest of the components in PCB panel. The first we choose the capacitor and transformer panel. Select the option icepak simplify and choose simplification type as level 1.
  11. Now we simplify the heat sink object using level 1 simplification.
  12. For PCB board we go by level 0 bounding box simplification.
  13. Now we simplify the usb port, I/O port by level 0 bounding box.
  14. Now the joint capacitors region are first splitted using split command. We create a plane and then we apply splitting of the components.
  15. For adapter region we split the adapter and pins section separately.
  16. Now we simplify the adapter region by level 2 polygonal simplification. The adapter region conversion to icepak object is shown below.
  17. The pins conversion to icepak object is also shown below.
  18. So the geometric cleaning of the power unit is done and is converted to icepak objects. The complete simplification is shown below.
