Week - 3 Drop test Challenge
AIM:
To create a simulation for a drop test of mobile phone using LS-Dyna solver.
PROCEDURE:
1.First , we have to import the model to the solver .The unit system we are using is g/mm/ms.

2.Now we can delete the solid part(yellow) so that we can assume the solid part as 2d wall. Then duplicate nodes are serached and merged using Element Tools>Dup Nod.
3.Now we have to set the material cards for both phone and floor. For phone we use linear plasticity material MAT024 and for floor we use a rigid material MAT 020.

4.Now sections are created for both the materials using section keyword to give thickness and id.

5.Now the created material and section cards are assigned to their repective parts.

6.Now we have to set the boundary conditions for the problem. Now we are going to constrain all the DOF 's of the floor on its edges using a SPC set. Before that, create a node set for both the phone and edges of the floor.

7.Then we have to define the contact between the phone and ground using contact keyword and we are using automatic surface to surface contact card. Here floor is set as master segment and phone is set as slave segment ,as floor is stiffer we set it as master.

8.Then the initial drop velocity has to be given which is given using initial keyword .The velocity is assumed as 10mm/ms and assigned to the phone part in negative z direction.

9.Now the termination time should be specified to stop the simulation at required time .This is done using control termination card and here we give the time as 10 ms.

10.Now we have to specify the output files we require for post processing .The ASCII options defined are GLSTAT,ELOUT and MATSUM .Binary D3PLOT is also requested with a time interval of 0.5 sec.

11.Now the setup is ready and is ready for simulation.Opne LS Run and load the .k file .Now run the simualtion and also run a model check to check any errors present in the model.

12.Now open the d3plot file for post processing , go to fringe component and see the Von Mises stress to see the stress values .We can see that the stress propagates from the bottom to the top .

14.Now the ascii files are loaded and the plots for kinetic, internal and total energy are plotted and analysed.

The kinetic energy is initially high due to the velocity and after impact it is transferred to internal energy .
CONCLUSION:
Thus the simulation for drop test of a mobile has been completed using LS DYNA.
