Week-3 Challenge: ADVISOR Tool
Aim:
- To analyze range of vehicle in the ‘EV_ default _ in’ file using default parameters and with cargo weight increased to 500kg
- In the above condition try changing the battery and repeat the simulation
- To perform grade-ability test with ‘PRIUS_ Jpn_ default in’ life
Objective:
To get familiarized with the ADVISOR Tool and understand its capabilities.
Solution:
The ADVISOR (Advanced vehicle simulator) Tool has been developed for rapid analysis of the performance and fuel economy of conventional, electric and hybrid vehicles. It also provides a backbone for the detailed simulation and analysis of user define drive train components.
1.To analyze if the vehicle in the ‘EV_ defaults_ in’ file having default parameters &with cargo weight increased 500kg can complete a distance of 45km with the FTP drive cycle
The range of electric vehicle is the distance which it cover until the SOC of its battery goes from 100% to 10%
The ‘EV_ default_ in’ file was selected and only the cargo mass was changed to 500kg keeping all other parameters unaltered. This vehicles uses the ESS_PB25 Lead-Acid BATTERY (12V 26Ah) for energy storage. In the next step the FTP drive cycle was chosen the vehicle was simulated for a single cycle of FTP.
SOC(State Of Charge) : The soc is defined as the available capacity expressed as a percentage of some reference, sometimes its rated capacity but more likely its current (at charge-discharge cycle) capacity but this ambiguity can lead to confusion and errors.
The result of SOC of the battery:

Fuel consumption (L/100km) 0
Gasoline Equipment 12.5
Distance (km) 12
The result shows that for a single FTP drive cycle, the SOC of the battery reduces above the 70% and the vehicle covers the distance of 12km.The fuel consumption is mentioned in (L/100km).Since there is charge left in battery, the vehicle can cover additional distance, for the next simulation the no. of FTP drive cycles is increased to 4 .
The distance covered by a vehicle of 41.5km until the battery discharges completely, thus the vehicle can’t complete a distance of 45km even DOD is considered as 100%

Fuel consumption (L/100km) 0
Gasoline Equipment 12.2
Distance (km) 41.5
- In the above condition try changing the battery and repeat the simulation
In this case the battery, can be observed that the idle model of the previous battery actually make it possible for the vehicle to complete a distance of 45km in single charge. The distance covered of 46.1km exceeds the specified range of electric vehicle.
Fuel consumption (L/100km) 0
Gasoline Equipment 2.1
Distance (km) 46.1
- To perform grade-ability test with ‘PRIUS_ Jpn_ default in’ life.Grade-ability : Grade-ability by definition is the ability of commercial vehicle to negotiate a grade (slope/activity) and it varry from maximum(0% to 45%). The grade-ability test checkbox was enabled in step two for the grade-ability test. The angle was kept constant and the speed of the vehicles was varied to test the variation of grade-ability with speed. This was configured using the ‘Grade options’ button available.

The variation with speed is tabulated below:

Conclusion:
- Better Battery packs result in an increased range of the vehicle.
- Grade-ability decreases with increasing velocity and maximum speed range in 30-40(mph).
