Challenge

Week-3 Challenge: ADVISOR Tool

  1. For EV_defaults_in file, if cargo mass is 500 kg with all other default conditions, can the vehicle travel for 45 km with FTP drive cycle? Conclude your observations.
  • CASE 1: In the ADVISOR (Advance Vehicle Simulation Tool) GUI first we have to load file as ‘EV_default_in file’ from the drop-down menu. And also change the cargo mass to 500kg at the bottom right corner.
  • Then click on continue.
  • A new window of the driving cycle will open.
  • Here from the drop-down menu of the drive cycle select “CYC_FTP” driving cycle.
  • Then press ‘RUN’ in the bottom right corner.
  • In the final result we can see that, Distance travelled is just 11miles (17.7028km). So, the vehicle can’t travel a distance of 45km in a single charge. Also, it can be seen that, SOC (Second plot) has fallen to zero after nearly 2500 sec.
  1. In the above case, try changing the battery capacity and repeat the simulation.
  • Case 2: Now, Change the energy storage to ‘ESS_PB65_FocusEV’ and keeping other parameters similar to last case.
  • Then ‘RUN’ the simulation.
  • From the result we can see that, the distance 17.8km hasn’t changed but, SOC % at the end of 2500 sec. is 0.83 approx. and not zero like the last case. So, in one FTP cycle it covered 17.8 km and the charge is still remaining in the battery. So to check how much distance the vehicle will travel in one cycle we need to perform several drive cycle simulation. We will perform 7 drive cycle.
  • Now, at last we can see that, car will travel 59.7 miles (96 km) in a single charge and the SOC % is zero by 13000 Sec.

3. Perform gradeability test with PRIUS_Jpn_defaults_in file. Compare your results in table and conclude.

  • Case: 3 In the drop down menu select ‘PRIUS_Jpn_defaults_in’ and rest of the parameters are kept default.
  • Then press continue in the bottom right
  • Select gradeability option and select grade options
  • The speed is kept as 55mph – Then gradeability is 1.7 %
  • The speed is 35mph – Then gradeability has increased to 2.4 %.
  • The speed is 45mph – Then gradeability has increased to 2.2 %

So, we can conclude by saying that, as speed increases the gradeability decreases.
