Week-3 Challenge: ADVISOR Tool
ADVISOR TOOL :
Advanced Vehicle Simulator (ADVISOR) was first developed in November 1994 at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory. It was designed as an analysis tool to assist the US Department of Energy (DOE) in developing technologies for hybrid electric vehicles (HEV) through the Hybrid Electric Vehicle Propulsion System contracts with Ford, General Motors, and DaimlerChrysler. Its primary role is to highlight the system-level interactions of hybrid and electric vehicle components and their impacts on the vehicle performance and fuel economy.
ADVISOR, NREL’s ADvanced VehIcle SimulatOR, is a set of model, data, and script text files for use with Matlab and Simulink. It is designed for rapid analysis of the performance and fuel economy of conventional, electric, and hybrid vehicles. ADVISOR also provides a backbone for the detailed simulation and analysis of user defined drivetrain components, a starting point of verified vehicle data and algorithms from which to take full advantage of the modeling flexibility of Simulink and analytic power of MATLAB.
You may benefit from using ADVISOR if you want to:
- estimate the fuel economy of vehicles that have not yet been built
- learn about how conventional, hybrid, or electric vehicles use (and lose) energy throughout their drivetrains
- compare relative tailpipe emissions produced on a number of cycles
- evaluate an energy management strategy for your hybrid vehicle’s fuel converter
- optimize the gear ratios in your transmission to minimize fuel use or maximize performance, etc.
HOW TO START ADVISOR TOOL ?
- To Launch ADVISOR TOOL, First Start MATLAB and then Set defult element location folder to advisor file or folder.
- After opening the MATLAB in the command window type "advisor" and press enter to open.
- After Opening new Window will popup and then set " Metric " as a unit. Then Start advisor tool.
- Then Advisor Tool will launch a new window to start.
ADVISOR TOOL :

Q1. For EV_defaults_in file, if cargo mass is 500 kg with all other default conditions, can the vehicle travel for 45 km with FTP drive cycle? Conclude your observations.
First, Loading EV_default_in file from drop_down list box menu and changing parallel_default_in to EV_default_in from Vehicle input window.
- After Changing the cargo mass value to 500 kg.
- After Changing the total mass of the vehicle to be seen.
- Clicking on the contiue button, then a new window will popup with simulation parameter screen.

- For our requirement, During Simulation parameter window change drive cycle to CYC_FTP by selecting from drop_down menu.
- Below that we will see # of cycles from here we can set our drive cycle.

- After pressing " RUN " button, the simulation will start and it will show results in a new window.
- Which we can see that an error occur as the EV ran out of battery charge for this type of drive cycle.

- So, we need a total distance covered to be 45km and this drive cycle can only complete 17.8km.
- therefore we need more than one drive cycle to complete more than 45km.
- So that we should have more than 2 or 3 drives cycle will achive 45km.

Result with 3 Drive Cycle

The Distance traveled by vehicle in 3 drive cycle is 41.4km. Which has finished SOC of 100%.
| No of Drives Cycle | Distance Covered (Kms) |
| 1 | 17.8 |
| 2 | 35.5 |
| 3 | 41.4 |
The Minimum distance travel by car is 17.8km with drive cycle CYC_FTP, Whereas Maximum distance travel by car is 41.4km. which consumes 100% of battery in 3 Drive Cycles.
Therefore EV_default cannot travel distance of 45km due to insufficient SOC.
Q2. In the above case, try changing the battery capacity and repeat the simulation.
- In Vehicle input window we will being changing the capacity of battery from energy storage.
- Which will be " # of mod V nom " describes the battery capacity.
- So we will change module of batteries from first box and we will see that changes in voltage and weight of battery.

- New simulation parameter window will open, here we will change drive cycle to 2 or 3, one at time and run simulation.
- After completing of simulation, we will see result window where we observe change in distance of vehicle travel.
- We can repeat this simulation by changing battery module and drive cycle.
i). Energy storage system with 30 modules and 2 Drive cycles :

ii). Energy storage system with 30 modules and 3 Drive cycle :

Table :
| Drive Cycle | Battery mod | Voltage | Km | Battery Weight |
| 2 | 30 | 370 | 35.5 | 330 |
| 3 | 30 | 370 | 49.1 | 330 |
- Battery modules 30 and with 3 drive cycles, distance traveled is 49.1km.
- While charging battery module in drive cycle 2 we get constant distance travel.
- Charging Battery module in drive cycle 3 we get changes in distance travle by vehicle.
- To cover 45km distance a 30 module of 370-volt batteery is required.
Q3. Perform gradeability test with PRIUS_Jpn_defaults_in file Compare your results in table and conclude.
- In ADVISOR tool Vehicle input window select " PRIUS_JPN_default model.
- Click continue to next window.
- Simulation Parameter window will open.
- Select the gradeability test and click on grade option box, a new dialogue box will open.

- In grade option box we can change speed or duration with respect to our simulation.
- So, for this simulation, I change speed one time and duration another time.

- Click on All System enabled.
- Then Click on constant road grade.
- Click, Ok and run the simulation. And a result window will open showing different result depend upon input data.
- Speed - 5 mph (or) 8.0 kmph :
Gradeability = 32.8 %

- Speed - 10 mph (or) 16.1 kmph :
Gradeability = 30.3 %

- Speed - 15 mph (or) 24.1 kmph :
Gradeability = 24.4 %

- Speed - 20 mph (or) 32.2 kmph :
Gradeability = 19.8 %

- Speed - 25 mph (or) 40.2 kmph :
Gradeability = 16.5 %

- Speed - 30 mph (or) 48.3 kmph :
Gradeability = 14.7 %

- Speed - 35 mph (or) 56.3 kmph :
Gradeability = 13 %

- Speed - 40 mph (or) 64.4 kmph :
Gradeability = 11.7 %

| S.No | Vehicle Speed (mph) | Vehicle Speed (kmph) | Gradeability % |
