Week-3 Challenge: ADVISOR Tool
AIM: Use ADVISOR tool to simulate the following objectives:
1. For EV_defaults_in file, if cargo mass is 500 kg with all other default conditions, can the vehicle travel for 45 km with FTP drive cycle? Conclude your observations.
2. In the above case, try changing the battery capacity and repeat the simulation.
3. Perform gradeability test with PRIUS_Jpn_defaults_in file
Compare your results in table and conclude.
INTRODUCTION:
ADVISOR an acronym of NREL’s ADvanced VehIcle SimulatOR, is a set of model, data, and script text files for use with Matlab and Simulink. It is used to conduct rapid analysis of the performance and fuel economy of conventional, electric, and hybrid vehicles. It also provides a detailed simulation and analysis of user defined drivetrain components, a starting point of verified vehicle data and algorithms from which to take full advantage of the modeling flexibility of Simulink and analytic power of MATLAB.
Advantages:
- To estimate the fuel economy
- To understand enery distribution in conventional, hybrid, or electric vehicles
- To optimize the gear ratios in your transmission to minimize fuel use or maximize performance, etc.
METHODOLOGY:
1. For EV_defaults_in file, if cargo mass is 500 kg with all other default conditions, can the vehicle travel for 45 km with FTP drive cycle? Conclude your observations.
Solution:
open Advisor tool by first dumping the files in the Matlab installation folder.
Command window: Type advisor and enter
Select Metric System
Then follow the below input in the respective windows
| Input | ||
| drive cycle | CYC_FTP-1 | In Simulation parameter window |
| Mass | 500 kg | Vehicle input window |
| Load file | EV_default_in | Vehicle input window |
| Drive train | ev | Vehicle input window |

Repeat the same procedure by increasing the no. of cycles in simulation window.
| Output | |||
| S.No. | No. of Drive Cycle | Distance in Km | SOC % remaining |
| 1 | 1 | 17.8 | 60% |
| 2 | 2 | 35.5 | 30% |
| 3 | 3 | 41.4 | 0% |
Inference: It is not possible for the EV_default to travel 45 km due to insufficient SOC.
2. In the above case, try changing the battery capacity and repeat the simulation.
Solution:
| Input | |
| drive cycle | CYC_FTP-1 |
| Mass | 500 kg |
| Drive train | EV_default_in |
| Battery Capacity | Variable |

Output:
| S.No. | No. of Drive Cycle | Battery Modules | Distance in Km | Battery Weight Kg | Voltage V |
| CASE 1 | 2 | 26 | 35.5 | 286 | 321 |
| 2 | 27 | 35.5 | 297 | 333 | |
| 2 | 28 | 35.5 | 308 | 345 | |
| CASE 2 | 3 | 26 | 42.7 | 286 | 321 |
| 3 | 27 | 44.8 | 297 | 333 | |
| 3 | 28 | 46.3 | 308 | 345 |

Inference:
Drive cycle 2 : Did not show any increase in distance with increase in battery module
Drive cycle 3 : Shows increase in distance with increase in battery module and at 28 modules @ 345Volt it was able to cover the required 45 km distance
3. Perform gradeability test with PRIUS_Jpn_defaults_in file
Compare your results in table and conclude.
| Input | |||
| Drive train | PRIUS_JPN_default | Vehicle input window | |
| Gradeability test | Select | Simulation parameter window | |
| drive cycle | CYC_FTP-1 | Simulation parameter window | |
| No. of Drive cycle | 3 | Simulation parameter window | |

Duration 10 sec and speed = 20 miles/hr

Duration 15 sec and speed = 20 miles/hr

Output:
| S.No. | Duration sec |
Vehicle speed mph |
Vehicle speed kmph |
Gradeability % |
| CASE 1 | 10 | 20 | 32.186 | 19.8 |
| 30 | 48.279 | 14.7 | ||
| 40 | 64.372 | 11.7 | ||
| 45 | 72.4185 | 10.7 | ||
| CASE 2 | 15 | 20 | 32.186 | 22.1 |
| 30 | 48.279 | 16.9 | ||
| 40 | 64.372 | 13.8 | ||
| 45 | 72.4185 | 12.6 |

Inference: As the speed of vehicle increases the gradeability decreases.
Conclusion: The given objectives were simulated successfully using advisor tool and following conclusions were made:
- It is not possible for the EV_default to travel 45 km due to insufficient SOC @ given input conditions in example 1.
- Drive cycle 2 of example 2: Did not show any increase in distance with increase in battery module
- Drive cycle 3 of example 2: Shows increase in distance with increase in battery module and at 28 modules @ 345Volt it was able to cover the required 45 km distance
- As speed of vehicle increases the gradeability decreases.
