Week-3 Challenge: ADVISOR Tool
USE OF ADVISOR TOOL
AIM:-
TO USE THE ADVISOR TOOL FOR SIMULATION
OBJECTIVE:-
1. For the EV_defaults_in file, if cargo mass is 500 kg with all other default conditions, can the vehicle travel for 45 km with an FTP drive cycle? Conclude your observations.
2. In the above case, try changing the battery capacity and repeat the simulation.
3. Perform gradeability test with PRIUS_Jpn_defaults_in file. Compare your results in the table and conclude.
Introduction of ADVISOR tool:-
ADVISOR tool, developed in November 1994 by the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL). Advanced Vehicle Simulator, is a set of model, data, and script text files for use with Matlab and Simulink. It is designed for rapid analysis of the performance and fuel economy of conventional, electric, and hybrid vehicles. ADVISOR also provides a backbone for the detailed simulation and analysis of user-defined drivetrain components, a starting point of verified vehicle data and algorithms from which to take full advantage of the modeling flexibility of Simulink and analytic power of MATLAB.
You may benefit from using ADVISOR if you want to:
- Estimate the fuel economy of vehicles that have not yet been built
- Learn about how conventional, hybrid or electric vehicles use (and lose) energy throughout their drivetrains
- Compare relative tailpipe emissions produced on a number of cycles
- Evaluate an energy management strategy for your hybrid vehicle’s fuel converter
- Optimize the gear ratios in your transmission to minimize fuel use or maximize performance, etc.
How to start ADVISOR Tool:-
- Launch the MATLAB and st default location folder to the advisor.
- Now in the command window of MATLAB type "advisor" and hit enter.
- A new window will open and then always set the unit "metric" and top right corner there is one start option click on it.
Default window of ADVISOR tool given below:-

Q-1). For the EV_defaults_in file, if cargo mass is 500 kg with all other default conditions, can the vehicle travel for 45 km with an FTP drive cycle? Conclude your observations.
Load the ADVISOR tool from the MATLAB command window and select the metric unit and change the load file from PARALLEL_Default_In to EV_Default_In. After that change the cargo mass to 500Kg and keeping the remaining parameters the same and hit the continue button to load the simulation parameter window.

In the simulation Parameter window first, change the drive cycle from CYC_UDDS to CYC_FTP in the drop-down menu. After that hit the RUN button, the simulation will start and it will show the results in the new window.

RESULT WINDOW:-

The distance traveled by the vehicle in 1 drive cycle is 17.8km.
Increasing the number of cycles to 2:-

Results with 2 drive cycles:-

Now the distance traveled by the vehicle in the 2 drive cycle is 35.5km.
Increasing the number of cycles to 3:-

Results with 3 drive cycles:-

Now the distance traveled by the vehicle in the 3 drive cycle is 41.4km.
The minimum distance travel by the car is 17.8km with drive cycle CYC_FTP whereas the maximum distance travel by the car is 41.4km which consumes 100% of the battery in 3 drive cycles.
Therefore EV_Default cannot travel a distance of 45 km due to insufficient SOC.
Q-2). In the above case, try changing the battery capacity and repeat the simulation?
In the above case, try to change the battery capacity and repeat the simulation. The current capacity is kept as 25 we need to increase the battery pack capacity so that the vehicle can run more than 45km.
"#of mod V nom" describes the battery capacity, so we will change the module number of batteries from the first box and we will see that changes in voltage and weight of the battery.
After multiple tries, we observed when the Energy Storage System with 28 modules and 3 drive cycles then the vehicles reached 46.3km.
Vehicle Input Window:-

Simulation Parameter Window:-

Result Window:-

Battery modules 28 and with 3 drive cycles, the distance traveled by the vehicle is 46.3km. To cover a 45km distance a 28 module 345V battery is required.
Q-3). Perform gradeability test with PRIUS_Jpn_defaults_in file. Compare your results in the table and conclude.
- In the ADVISOR tool vehicle, the input window selects the PRIUS_JPN_default modal.
- Continue to the next window.
- The simulation window will open.
- Select the gradeability test and click on the grade option box, a new dialogue box will open.
Vehicle Input Window with PRIUS_JPN_default:-

Grade Test Advanced Options Window was given below:-

- In the grade option box, we can change the speed with respect to our simulation.
- Click on all system-enabled options.
- Then click on OK. Then hit the RUN option and the result window will open showing results depends upon the data.
1). Results With Speed = 20mph.

2). Result with Speed = 30mph

2). Result with Speed = 35mph

2). Result with Speed = 45mph

2). Result with Speed = 50mph

- Results in Tabular Form given below:-

From the above tables, It can be seen that when vehicle speed increases the gradeability decreases.
CONCLUSION:-
- The minimum distance travel by the car is 17.8km with drive cycle CYC_FTP whereas the maximum distance travel by the car is 41.4km which consumes 100% of the battery in 3 drive cycles.
- Battery modules 28 and with 3 drive cycles, the distance traveled by the vehicle is 46.3km. To cover a 45km distance a 28 module 345V battery is required.
- It can be seen that when vehicle speed increases the gradeability decreases.
