Week-3 Challenge: ADVISOR Tool
Q1. For EV_defaults_in file, if cargo mass is 500 kg with all other default conditions, can the vehicle travel for 45 km with FTP drive cycle? Conclude your observations.
- On the advisor tool input page, from the load file dialog box, the EV_defaults_in vehicle model is loaded. The payload mass is increased to 500kg and total mass of the vehicle is calculated to be 1508kg.
- Once all the vehicle data is modelled, the next step involves defining the drivecycle input. Since we are going to be simulating a FTP (Federal Test Procedure) drivecyle, it is chosen from the drive cycle drop down box. Each cyle simulates a maximum driving distance of 17.77 km and as our objective is to know whether the vehicle can travel 45kms with the default battery pack, we need to simulate 3 cycles.
- From the above figure it can be observed that the total distance the vehicle can cover is 41.4km which falls short of the 45km threshold. It can be concluded that the vehicle does not enough battery power to deliver the required range so the battery pack capacity has to be increased to deliver more range.
Q2. In the above case, try changing the battery capacity and repeat the simulation.
- The number of modules on the battery pack has been increased to 50 from 25. The instantaneous voltage and mass of the pack increases correspondingly. The total mass of the vehicle stands at 1783kg compared to 1508kg from the earlier case. The simulation was run on a FTP drivecycle for 5 cycles to calculate the range of the vehicle.
- It can be observed that the total distance the vehicle can travel is 78.2 km. By increasing the number of modules on the battery back by a factor of 2, doubles the total range approximately by a factor of 2 as well for a FTP drivecyle.
Q3. Perform gradeability test with PRIUS_Jpn_defaults_in file. Compare your results in table and conclude.
- The PRIUS_Jpn_defaults_in is loaded onto advisor tool and keeping all the default values, we will be simulating the vehicle model on UDDS drivecyle enabling gradeability test to calculate the gradeability at various speed ranges.
