Week-3 Challenge: ADVISOR Tool
ADVISOR Tool
AIM:
- For EV_defaults_in file, if cargo mass is 500 kg with all other default conditions, can the vehicle travel for 45 km with FTP drive cycle?
- In the above case, try changing the battery capacity and repeat the simulation.
- Perform gradeability test with PRIUS_Jpn_defaults_in file.
OBJECTIVES:
Using ADVISOR tool added with MATLAB to simulate different EV/HEV and understand the results from the simulation. We include for each vehicle the model image of vehicle inputs, simulation parameters, and result from those simulations.
ADVISOR tool is a rapid analysis of the performance and fuel economy of EV/HEV. It is used as backward looking facing model. In this we just look up to tables and not based on any model file like in MATLAB model.
PROCEDURE:
1.
First of all we open the vehicle input page in ADVISOR tool and load the EV_defaults_in file, and change the cargo mass to 500 kg keeping all other default conditions.
The calculated mass also changes accordingly.
- On this simulation parameter we just change the drive cycle to CYC_FTP out of a number of different drive cycles.
- As the vehicle in 1 cycle takes 2477 sec to cover distance of 17.77km with 25 modules of battery, where the maximum and average speed are 91.25km/hr, 25.82km/hr respectively.
- According to CYC_FTP plot 43% (approx.) speed of these vehicles remains between 0 to 8 km/hr. It also gains the maximum speed in the initial 500 sec.
- The SOC can be seen from the below result screen as it declines up to 60% (approx.) in 2427 sec. And till this point it also increases many times due to regenerative braking.
- The emission is 0 as it is an EV.
- In this we need at least 3 cycle of this drive cycle with same battery modules(25) to reach near value of 45 km distance which is 41.4 km after 3 cycle.
- The SOC decreases to zero in 5500 sec (approx.) That is why, it shows the warning as the distance exceeds the range of battery.
2
In the above case, we try changing the battery capacity from 25 to 35 modules and repeat the simulation.
In this we run it for 1 cycle where it covers the same distance but due to change in battery modules (35) the SOC is now declines to 70%.
Whereas with 25 modules it goes up to 60% in 1 cycle.
The SOC with 35 modules decreses to zero in 3rd cycle in 7400sec(approx.) where covered distance is 53.2 km.
3.
In this we are Performing gradeability test with PRIUS_Jpn_defaults_in file, which has 40 battery modules.
- In 1 cycle it covers a distance of 11.99km in 1369 sec.
- The speed remains between 36 to 50 km/hr for 17% and between 0 to 8 km/hr for 24%.
- In this we perform the gradeability test.
- Here the grade value is 6% for 55mph speed for 10 sec.
- In this we enable the battery storage during the climbing.
The Gradeability test result for default values are-
- For batter understanding of relationship between Gradeability and speed, We have changed the speed 60,70,75,90(in mph), whish gives the following results by passing the Gradeability test
- At 100 mph it fails the Gradeability test
According to the above result it is clear that the Gradeability decreases with increase in speed.
CONCLUSION:
For an EV/HEV, if we increse the number of battery modules then it also increase the total covered distance.
The increase in gradeability will result in decreasing speed with same time duration.
