Compare the different architectures of HEV. Discuss the pro's and con's

Ans.Different architecture of HEV are:

1. Series architecture
2. Parallel architecture
3. Series Parallel architecture

Series architecure:

• It has both ICE engine and motor.
• Electric motor is only connectedto transmission system.
• Motor gets electric input power from battery or generator.

Modes of operations are:

• Engine mode
• Battery mode
• Hybrid mode
• Regenerative mode

Advantages:

Does not require multi ratio gear box.

Disadvantages:

Energy efficiency is less.

Example: BMW i3

Parallel architecture:

• Commonly seen in commercial passenger cars.
• Both ICE engine and motor is connected to transmission system.

Modes of operations are:

• Engine mode
• Battery mode
• Hybrid mode
• Regenerative mode

Example: Chevy Volt

Series Parallel architecture:

• Series path from engine to wheel.
• Parallel path from battery to wheel through power split.

Example: Toyota Prius
