Week 2 Session 7
Architechture of hybrid vehicles
There are 3 types of Hybrid Vehicle Architecture.
a. Series Architecture.
b. Parallel Architecture.
c. Series Parallel Architecture.
| Sno. | Series Architecture | Parallel Architecture | Series-Parallel Architecture |
| 1. | The vehicle is exclusively propelled by the electric motor. | The Vehicle is propelled by either Electric motor or ICE but not both at same time. | The Vehicle is driven by both ICE and Electric motor using power-split devices. |
| 2. | ICE is connected to generator to produce electricity for Electric motor | ICE is connected to the wheels | ICE is connected to the wheels |
| 3. | Only Electric motor drives the vehicle. | Both Electric motor and ICE drives the vehicle but one at a same time. | Both Electric motor and ICE work simultaneously to drive the vehicle for longer range. |
| 4. | Generator available to charge battery as well as power electric motor | Genarator not required | Generator available to charge battery as well as power electric motor |
| 5. | Example-BMW i3 | Example-Honda Accord |
Example-Toyota Prius |
a. Series Architecture
| Pros | Con |
| Better fuel Economy when compared to Parallel | Additional weight |
| Less Load on ICE becuase they are used in optimal speeds | Cost |
| Good for light weight vehicles | ICE needs to power both electric motor and Generator. So more load in long distance. |

b. Parallel Architecture
| Pros | Con |
| Both Engine and Motot drives the engine. | Battery can be charged only when vehicle is moving. |
| High Torque | Complex transmission when compared to series architecture. |
| No generator needed so reduction in weight | Requires additional device for Power Split |
| Less Emission because engine runs for short period of time | Requires Plug-In system for charging. |
| Compact components arrangement |

c. Series Parallel Architecture
| Pros | Con |
| Can be charged even when vehicle is at standstill | Costly |
| No Plug-in system needed | Complex transmission. |
| Low fuel consumption | Heavy |
| Lower emission |
