Week 2 Challenge : Surface meshing on a Pressure valve

Aim:

To clean up the given model (pressure valve), and mesh them with 3 different target length of 1mm, 3mm and 5mm.

Procedure:

  1. Import the pressure valve into ansa and ensure the drawing mode is in PDI.
  2. Go to check->Geometry, check manager pop up window appears.
  3. In the check manager give visible under execute on and choose the required checks and execute the check.
  4. After execution it will show the list of errors, solve those errors using new face, fill hole and cut command under topo.
  5. Once all the errors are cleared check again with check->geometry command and make sure no more error exist.
  6. Go to mesh icon and select length under perimeters, a pop up window appears.
  7. slect perimter in th pop up window and select all the cons and give enter and give the value of 5mm for length and give ok.
  8. then select macro and slect all the faces and hit enter and give the value of 5mm for length and give ok.
  9. then go to mesh parameter and select triangular mesh from drop down list and give target length as 5mm and for minimum mesh legth give a value less than the target lenth. (V23.1.0 doest have max length under mesh parameter).
  10. Go to Quality ctiteria and give maximum and minimum mesh length with some tolerance to the target mesh length.
  11. Click spot mesh and selct the faces required to mesh and give enter, the desired mesh will get generated.
  12. save the work
  13. For the other meshs of 3mm and 1mm target length repeat step 6 to 12 with respective value and save the same.

Result:

1. The one with the targeted mesh length of 5mm has mesh/element count around 9444.

  1. the mesh quality at the curved surface are poor
  2. the mesh at the spring barely captured the shape.

2. The one with the targeted mesh length of 3mm has mesh/element count around 24789.

  1. the mesh quality at the curved surface are improved except region with smaller curve radius.
  2. the mesh at the spring also improved but still required further improvement.

3. The one with the targeted mesh length of 1mm has mesh/element count around 212422.

  1. the mesh quality at the curved surface are almost perfect.
  2. the mesh at the spring also able to capture its actual shape.

Conclusion:

From the above result it is very clear that, decreasing the mesh length will capture any body with high resolutioon without any major error, but as you can absorb that the decreasing mesh size will increase the element count to almost 3 time from 5 to 3mm, and almost 10 times from 3 to 1mm. The increase in element count increase the computational time and resources for analysis, so it is always recommended to maintain the element count in desired level for any objects or surfaces, also it is recommended to mesh the element seperately wherever required, to get better resut with right mesh count.
