Week 2 Challenge - Overall Efficiency of EV & ICEV comparison.

Aim : To compute the overall efficiency of an electric vehicle and an IC engine vehicle.

Introduction :

Electric vehicles (EVs) are more efficient than their gasoline-powered counterparts. An EV electric drive system is only responsible for a 15% to 20% energy loss compared to 64% to 75% for a gasoline engine. EVs also use regenerative braking to recapture and reuse energy that normally would be lost in braking and waste no energy idling.

EVs convert over 77% of the electrical energy from the grid to power at the wheels where as conventional gasoline vehicles only convert about 12%–30% of the energy stored in gasoline to power at the wheels.

For a vehicle, the energy efficiency/fuel energy conversion efficiency for a given drive cycle is defined mathematically as,

`η = [E_(tr)]/[E_(fuel)]`

where η is the efficiency (%),

Etr is the forward tractive energy & Efuel is the energy of the fuel consumed for the cycle.

Energy losses in EV:

Electric Drive train losses – 20 %

Charging losses – 10 %

Accessory losses – 4 %

Auxiliary electrical losses – 4 %

TOTAL LOSSES CALCULATION IN EXCEL -

Energy losses in Gasoline (IC Engine)vehicle:

Engine losses – 72 %

Auxiliary electrical losses – 2%

Drive train losses – 6 %

Parasitic losses – 4 %

Idle losses – 3 %

TOTAL LOSSES CALCULATION IN EXCEL -

From the above results we could predict that the EV has more overall efficiency as compared to ICE Vehicle. There is no equal efficiency for EV and ICE vehicle in a normal case.

Conclusion: Thus, we had performed the necessary calculation for total energy losses in an EV along with comparing the ICE vehicle. ICE vehicle has more total losses than an EV when considered the various parameters.
