Challenge

Week 2 : Basic Calibration of Single cylinder SI-Engine

1.Run the case at 1800 rpm and list down important parameters

  • air flow rate = 24.64 kg/hr
  • BMEP = 9.47 bar
  • BSFC = 239.16 g/kWh
  • In-cylinder pressure = 48.89 bar

2. Increase the power output at 3600 rpm by 10%

Initially, a simulation is done with the available engine. the power output was 16.60 bar.

To increase the power there are various methods

  • Changing compression ratio
  • changing engine dimension.

But above said points need modification of the engine.

We can increase the power of engine without modifying it by,

  • making fuel richer at the same time making the Mass burn Fraction shorter, as more fuel available, the mixture burns faster.
  • This requires a slight increase in the airflow rate.

By increasing the intake air pressure by 0.1 bar resulted in an increase in power by 10% without affecting other parameters.

Eingine test results are as shown below picture.
