Week 12 - Project-1
Objective: To mesh the following component as per the provided quality criteria and assign thickness.
Procedure:
- Firstimported the model file using the Import Geometry option under the Import.
- Switched to topo mode to check for solids.
- In topo mode we can see some errors on surfaces(free cons),corrected them. To remove these free cons toggled them using Quick edit tool in Geometry panel.
Before
After
- Then performed some geometric cleaning on the surfaces for this used replace point option under the quick edit panel.
Before
After
- Now used Defeature option in the Geometry panel to defeature the fillets which are failing min length criteria.
Before
After
- To create mid-surface for the given component we used manual mid surface extraction process as auto mid-surface isn’t giving good results in this case. Here I have extracted mid surfaces in steps(separately for similar surfaces or surfaces with common thickness).
- Mid-surface 1
- Mid-surface 2
- Mid-surface 3
- Mid-surface 4
Similarly extracted the remaining mid surfaces.
The complete extracted mid surfaces.
- Now to connect the different extracted mid surfaces to make them one used the extend option under the surface edit command in the geometry panel. The resulting shared surfaces are shown by triple con(yellow line).
- To mesh the mid surfaces used the automesh command in the 2D panel keeping element size as 4mm and element type as mixed. The resulting meshed surface is shown in below image.
- Then assigned the required values for the quality criteria’s.
- After the meshing is done checked the element for the required criteria’s using the quality index in 2D panel.
- Now corrected the elements failing for the set criteria’s using the cleanup tools in the quality index. The resulting elements are free from any error.
- Now created properties for the meshed surfaces in order to assign thickness to the elements. The assigned thickness can be seen through using 2D detailed element representation option.
- Meshed-surface 1 with assigned thickness.
- Meshed-surface 2 with assigned thickness.
- Meshed-surface 3 with assigned thickness.
Similarly performed for all the remaining meshed surfaces.
Result: The resulting surface is meshed and passing all set quality criteria’s along with the thickness assigned to it.
Conclusion: In this challenge, I learned
- To work on a plastic component with surfaces of different thickness.
- Also to manually extract mid surface for all those surfaces.
- Also to connect to different surfaces to make a common surface.
- To mesh the generated mid surfaces as per set criteria’s.
- To assign thickness for the meshed components by generating properties for all the meshed surfaces with different thickness.
