Challenge

Side Plastic door mesh and thickness assigning

Objective:

Mesh the component given below and assign thickness, also with provided quality criteria:

Component- Hood

Target Element Length = 4mm

S.N Quality Criteria Value
1 Aspect Ratio 5
2 Skewness 45
3 Warping 15
4 Taper 0.5
5 Min. Length 2mm
6 Max. Length 6mm
7 Min angle Quad 45
8 Max angle Quad 135
9 Min angle Tria 20
10 Max angle Tria 120
10 Tria % 10

Procedure:
1. Import the model to hypermesh

2. We need to split component in 4 parts and then mesh seperately. Also, we can place each part in different collector (Tool - Organise - copy to dest)

3. Hide the surface component except the working component.

4. Defeature surface fillets. (Geometry - defeature - surf fillets)

5. Manually create midsurface of component (Geometry - surfaceedit - offset)

Note: Measure the outer and inner point (Using F4 - two points), and offset the surface in the middle of the distance.

6. Mesh the 2-D component (2D - Automesh -Select the surface - Target size 4 - Create Mesh with type Mixed)

Note: Mesh the ribs and the other surfaces individually

7. Edit the quality criteria values as provided (Tool - Check element)

Also, Meshing criteria could be edited. (Preferences in toolbar - Meshing Criteria)

8. Tools used to meet quality criteria are as following to the failed elements as seen i n the component in different color (red/yellow) :

  • Place node is used to move the nodes.
  • Node/Element Optimize are used to optimize the respective Node/Element automatically.
  • Smooth is used to smooth the curvatures.
  • Drag tria element is used to drag out irrelevant trias.
  • Split quad is used to split the quad into respective tria or quad.
  • Combine tria is use to combine tria elemts to make a quad.

9. Some other Tools to meet quality criteria are as:

  • Mask is used to mask failure elements so that they could be meshed and edited without disturbing complete mesh.
  • Edit elements is used to Create, Split and Combine elements.
  • Replace is used to replace the nodes.

Repeat the above steps for each component seperately till there are no failing components and also there are no components failing in tool option check element.

10. Now, measure the individual thickness of each rib and surfaces and create property to assign thickness to each surfaces and ribs.

Note:

Measuring Thickness: Using F4 - two points.

Collector creation: Put similar thickness components in single collector.

Property creation: Change the value of thickness as required.

Assigning : Left click on the component collector and assign the desired property.

Result:

We have meshed the given model using the provided quality criteria and provided thickness to diffrent surfaces as can be seen in image below

Conclusion:

We have learned to mesh given model using different tools and meet the quality crietria requirements and finally assigning thickness.
