Week 12- Final project
Final project - Door trim Inner Panel
Role of plastic in the automobile industry:
The use of polymers as plastics in the construction of automobiles has continued to grow over the last decades. Nowadays they are the second most commonly found in cars.
Here are four reasons why plastic is used in car manufacturing:
- Plastics reduce the weight of cars
- Plastics and polymers contribute to the safety of cars
- Plastics help to lower car manufacturing costs
- Polymers advance the design of vehicles
Mainly each part is produced by an injection molding process, and they are attached using the attachment features finally they are assembled to make it a functional part
Injection Molding process -
The concept of injection molding is simple: melt plastic, flow it into the mold and take part shape, cool, and then de-mold. Injection molding makes parts in a discrete or discontinuous process. More injection molding machines are used for plastic processing than for any other equipment. Many automotive parts are made with injection molding, including body panels, instrument panels, seat backs, load floors, engine components, and interior components.

Considering the given Door trim Inner panel contains the parts -
- Door Armrest
- Lower substrate
- Bottle holder
- Map pocket
The general process to obtain the closed-body surface
- The given class A surface is considered
- A tooling axis is created by the observation method.
- Class A surface is checked for draft analysis to see that the given class A surface is good.
- Taking the same class B surface is created, wherever there are some not created they are created considering the class A surface.
- Along the given class A surface the class C surface is created. They are joined to make a Class A + C surface join.
- Then the B surface is trimmed with an A + C surface to create a closed-body surface.
- Going to part design workbench, it is converted to a close body.
- Finally, all the parts are checked for the draft so that there is no negative draft on the C surface.
