Week 11 Car Crash simulation

Aim : To perform an explicit dynamics simulation on Car crash model.

Objectives :

  • Perform a parametric study using 3 different values of thickness for the car body.
  • Analyse the total deformation and Equivalent stresses acting on the model.

Procedure :

Engineering data and Material selection :

  • Open explicit dynamics model.
  • Go to engineering data and open engineering data sources.
  • Open general non-linear materials.
  • Add Stainless steel NL.

Geometry :

  • Open geometry.
  • Import the model.

Model setup :

  • Open ANSYS mechanical.
  • Go to geometry and assign the material to Car body as Stainless steel NL.
  • Assign thickness to car body and create it as input parameter.

Symmetry region :

  • Insert the symmetry region and select the face of wall and and edges of the car body.

Contacts :

  • Delete default contacts.

Meshing :

  • Create the method under mesh and select the car body and select the type as triangles.
  • Insert sizing and select the faces as below and insert a sizing of 175mm.
  • Insert the method select the wall and type as tetrahedrons.
  • Click on generate and the mesh will be generated as below.

Fixed support :

  • Insert a fixed support under explicit dynamics and select the faces as below, to fix them for the simulation.

Displacement :

  • Insert a displacement to the face of wall for 500mm in the Z-Direction.

Analysis settings :

Solution :

Create output results for :

  • Total deformation.
  • Equivalent stress.
  • Equivalent strain.

Results :

Case 1 : For car body thickness 0.3 mm

Total deformation :

Equivalent stress :

Equivalent strain :

Case 2 : For car body thickness 0.7 mm

Total deformation :

Equivalent stress :

Equivalent strain :

Case 3 : For car body thickness 1 mm

Total deformation :

Equivalent stress :

Equivalent strain :

Parametric Study :

Comparison of Results :

Sr.No. Results Case 1 Case 2 Case 3
1 Maximum Total deformation (mm) 1034.8 1026.9 1021.1
2 Minimum Total deformation (mm) 0 0 0
3 Maximum Equivalent stress (MPa) 12097 12019 11964
4 Minimum Equivalent stress (MPa) 0 0 0
5 Maximum Equivalent strain 0.0613 0.0609 0.0606
6 Minimum Equivalent strain 0 0 0

Conclusion :

From the car crash simulation using three different thickness for car body we obtained varying results for each case. There is only a minor change in the values observed. As the thickness increases the stress, strain and deformation values get decreases.
