Week 10 - Challenge 2- Attachment Feature Creation (Dog House)

ATTACHEMENT FEATURE CREATION (DOG HOUSE)

AIM

Create the Dog House for the Door Trim considering the design rules

INTRODUCTION

DOG HOUSE:

Dog house is an engineering feature used in plastic design. Which is used as support feature. Sometimes other engineering features like snaps, locators, and screw bosses are mounted on them to increase their strength and as well as the height

Dog houses are subjected to draft analysis to prevent breakage of the component during ejection from the mould cavity. Dog house and other engineering components are built on the B-surface.

DESIGN CONSIDERATION:

TOOLING AXIS:

In injection moulding, the Class A surface is first analysed to determine the axis or tooling direction that separates the moulds. Tooling direction is critical for plastic product design because it determines mould direction

  • Check the best possible tooling direction by manually adjusting the compass.
  • By analysing the Class, A surface the y axis direction would clear most of the faces without any difficulties.
  • By creating the dummy tooling axis from the extract of the class A surface and analysed using ADVANCED DRAFT ANALYSIS Tool, the created dummy tooling axis would clear the production requirements.

CLASS B SURFACE

· It is the offset surface of the Class A Surface the offset value depends on the thickness of the material, here the offset value is 2.5mm

· Check for discontinuity and rework on the offset surface using Extract, Join, Extrapolate, Trim.

· Check with the boundary option to clarify whether it has any extra boundaries.

CLASS C SURFACE:

The surface that Joins both Class A and Class B surfaces is considered to be Class C Surface

Fig Class C Surface

· Create a boundary over the class A surface.

· And then create a sweep over the class A surface and which will intersect with Class B surface.

· Join the sweep created by extrapolate and trim them to make a single part.

· And then join the trimmed surface with the class A surface

FINAL TRIM:

· Trim the class A & C joined surface with the Class B surface for getting final hollow surface.

· Check with the boundary option in the final trimmed surface, whether any extra boundaries forming or not.

CLOSED SURFACE:

· Create a closed surface in the final trim.

DRAFT ANALYSIS

The Draft Analysis is a command that enables you to detect if the part you drafted will be easily removed. This type of analysis is performed based on colour ranges identifying zones on the analysed element where the deviation from the draft direction at any point, corresponds to specified values.

CONCLUSION

I have successfully created CLASS B and C surfaces using the given CLASS A surface of the door trim created main and side core tooling axes. Performed draft analysis the final component and the dog house.
