Week 10 - Challenge 1- Attachment Feature Creation (Ribs & Screw Boss)
Project Report: Design of Ribs and Screw Boss for Drill Handle
Introduction:
The purpose of this project is to design the ribs and screw boss for a drill handle following specific design rules. The design includes analysis of rib root thickness and the creation of a screw boss based on design guidelines.
Design of Ribs:
Ribs are essential structural elements that provide additional strength and stiffness to a component. In this project, ribs are designed for the drill handle using reference surface 'A' and creating a closed part in CATIA V5. The design rules for rib root thickness analysis should be adhered to.
Rib Root Thickness Analysis:
To perform the rib root thickness analysis, follow these steps:
a. Create a tooling axis for draft analysis.
b. Due to the presence of twisted surfaces within the reference surface 'A', the maximum achievable draft angle is limited to 0.5 degrees.
c. Perform the draft analysis using the 0.5-degree draft angle.
Design of Screw Boss:
The screw boss is a protruding feature used to provide a threaded hole for fastening purposes. The design of the screw boss for the drill handle should comply with the following design rules:
Draft: Apply a draft angle of 0.5 degrees on the walls of the boss.
Thickness: The boss thickness should typically be 40% of the nominal wall thickness at the base.
Height to Diameter Ratio: Maintain a ratio of 3:1 for the height to diameter of the boss.
Radii: The maximum radii allowed for the boss is 0.25mm.
Design Process:
a. Create a reference surface 'A' using the provided design guidelines.
b. Generate the rib and boss surfaces by utilizing the reference surface 'A' and creating a closed part in CATIA V5.
c. Ensure that the rib root thickness analysis is carried out according to the provided design rules and limitations.
d. Design the screw boss, considering the draft angle, thickness, height to diameter ratio, and radii constraints.
e. Verify the dimensions and features of the designed rib and screw boss to ensure they meet the specified requirements.
Conclusion:
In this project, the design of ribs and a screw boss for a drill handle was successfully accomplished. The rib root thickness analysis was carried out using a draft angle of 0.5 degrees, considering the limitations imposed by the twisted surfaces in the reference surface 'A.' The screw boss was designed following the provided design rules, including draft angle, thickness, height to diameter ratio, and maximum radii. The designed components meet the necessary specifications and can contribute to the overall strength and functionality of the drill handle
