Week 10 Bullet penetrating a Bucket Challenge
Aim : To perform an explicit dynamics simulation on a bullet penetrating into a bucket.
Objectives :
Use 3 different non linear materials for the bucket and analyse their behaviour for the same velocity of bullet.
Engineering data and Material selection :
- Open explicit dynamics model.
- Go to engineering data and open engineering data sources.
- Open explicit materials and add Tantalum material.
- Open general non-linear materials.
- Add Stainless steel NL, Aluminium Alloy NL and Magnesium Alloy NL.

Geometry :
- Open geometry.
- Import the model.
- Create edges where bullet is going to hit using split tool.

Model setup :
- Open ANSYS mechanical.
- Go to geometry and assign the material to bucket.
Case 1 : Stainless steel NL
Case 2 : Aluminium Alloy NL
Case 3 : Magnesium Alloy NL
- Make the Bullet stiffness behaviour to Rigid and assign material as Tantalum.

Contacts :
- Delete default contacts.
Meshing :
- Insert sizing and select edges of bucket where bullet is going to hit.
- Give element size of 6 mm.
- Set general element size of 10 mm and generate the mesh.

Analysis settings :

Fixed support :
- Fixed the bottom face of bucket.

Velocity :
- Insert velocity of magnitude -139000 mm/s to bullet in X-direction.

Solution :
Create output results for :
- Total deformation.
- Equivalent stress.
- Equivalent strain.
Results :

Comparison of Results :
| Sr.No. | Results | Case 1 | Case 2 | Case 3 |
| 1 | Maximum Total deformation (mm) | 1390 | 1390 | 1390 |
| 2 | Minimum Total deformation (mm) | 8.7731 E-23 | 2.8173 E-22 | 2.8173 E-22 |
| 3 | Maximum Equivalent stress (MPa) | 2430.6 | 522.05 | 742.05 |
| 4 | Minimum Equivalent stress (MPa) | 7.0102 | 3.871 | 6.7056 |
| 5 | Maximum Equivalent strain | 0.01390 | 0.00959 | 0.02677 |
| 6 | Minimum Equivalent strain | 0 | 0 | 0 |
Conclusion :
- Comparing the above results, when changing the bucket material all results will be change depends upon the material properties.
- Stainless steel NL material devlopes more stress values than others.
