Week 10 Bullet penetrating a Bucket Challenge
REPORT
BULLET PENETRATING A BUCKET
OBJECTIVE
To stimulate a bullet penetrating into a bucket and to find total deformation and equivalent stress for three different materials for bucket.
PROCEDURE
CASE 1
Drop explicit dynamics in ANSYS.
Opened the model in space claim GUI and split the model using design-plane and split body command , that is shown below.

Open the model in mechanical GUI
Rename them as bucket and bullet.
Set stiffness behaviour of the bullet to rigid.
The material used for bullet is tantalum and its properties are shown below,
The material used for bucket is aluminium alloy NL.
Deleted the contacts since explicit dynamics do not require contacts.
MESH
Need to create finer and smooth mesh on both portion of the bucket where the bullet penetrates.
Created coordinate system on the division on the bucket,
and created a sphere of influence of 60mm radius using face sizing.
Created a mesh of 6mm at that area and repeated that same process on the opposite side.
ANALYSIS SETTING
End time = 0.01
Maximum energy error = 5
Fixed support is given to the bucket.
A velocity of 100000 mm/s in negative X direction is given to the bullet.
Requested for total deformation and equivalent stress.
RESULTS
The total deformation
The equivalent stress
CASE 2
In case 2 we chose copper alloy NL as the material for bucket. All other procedures are same as case 1.

RESULTS

CASE 3
Here the material used for the bucket is magnesium alloy NL and all other procedures are same as case 1.

RESULTS

CONCLUSION
Completed the simulation using three different non linear materials for the bucket. The materials used for bucket in this simulation are aluminium alloy NL, copper alloy NL and magnesium alloy NL.
The maximum stress is developed in copper and almost same stress is developed in magnesium and aluminium.
The least deformation is developed in aluminium and same deformation is developed in magnesium and copper.
