Week 1 Understanding Different Battery Chemistry

Li-ion BATTERIES AND SPECIFICATIONS

1.NMC (Lithium Nickel Manganese Cobalt)

In here the cathode material consist of

-33% nickel

-33% manganese

-33% cobalt, in here all materials come by same mass.

half-reaction at the cathode is Li(x)MO2(s) → Li+(org) + Li(x-1) MO2(s) + e-. It is primarily M that is being oxidized.

The half-reaction at the anode is Li+(org) + e- → Li(gr)

2.LiFePO4 (Lithium Iron Phosphate)

In here the cathode material consist of Lithium, iron and phosphate

The chemical reaction occurring in the cell is

LiFePO4→Li+ fepo4 +e

3.LCO (Lithium Cobalt Oxide)

LCO is abbreviated from LCoO2, this is the most commonly or popularly used battery.

Its anode material is LiC6 and the cathode material is LiCoo2 and like in all lithium battery Li + is the carrier.

LiCoO2→Li+ Co+e

4.LMO (Lithium Manganese oxide)

In other words, we can say that Lithium manganese spinel in here the cathode material we are using is MnO2.

LiMnO2→Li+MnO2

These qualities are extremely important in the use in modern applications like electrical and hybrid vehicles and most importantly energy storage systems which are used in the renewable energy applications. The lithium-ion batteries chemistry is the same across the different lithium-ion battery types; during discharge, Lithium-ions are moved to the positive cathode from the negative anode through the organic electrolyte

5.NCA (Lithium Nickel cobalt Aluminium)

Lithium Nickel-Cobalt-Aluminium Oxide (NCA) is used as the cathode material for lithium-ion batteries, and is mainly used in electric automobiles. Due to a high nickel content of the Lithium Nickel-Cobalt-Aluminium Oxide (NCA) manufactured by the company, the capacity of batteries can be increased, which contributes to a longer distance that can be covered with a single-time charging. The company’s strength lies in integrated production from the nickel raw material up to the battery material.

LiNixCoyAlzO2 we can say that,

x+y+z=1

6.LTO (Lithium Titanate battery)

A lithium-titanate battery is a modified lithium-ion battery that uses Lithium Titanate instead of Carbon, on the surface of its anode. This gives the anode a surface area of about 100 square meters per gram, compared with 3 square meters per gram for carbon, allowing electrons to enter and leave the anode quickly. Also, the redox potential of Li+ intercalation into titanium oxides is more positive than that of Li+ intercalation into graphite.
