Week 1 Understanding Different Battery Chemistry

1) Prepare a table which includes materials & chemical reactions occurring at the anode and cathode of LCO, LMO, NCA, NMC, LFP and LTO type of lithium ion cells.Give your detailed explanation on it.

Commonly used lithium ion batteries are as follows,

Lithium Cobalt Oxide-LCO

Lithium Manganese Oxide-LMO

Lithium Nickel Manganese Cobalt Oxide-NMC

Lithium iron Phosphate-LFP

Lithium Nickel Cobalt Aluminium Oxide-NCA

Lithium Titanate-LTO

LCO:

Lithium Cobalt Oxide battery was invented during the year 1991, its anode material is C6 and the cathode material is LicoO2. It is used in various applications such as laptops and phone batteries.

LMO:

Lithium Ion Manganese Oxide battery is a lithium ion cell that uses manganese as a cathode. The anode used here is Graphite.

NCA:

Lithium Nickel Cobalt Aluminium Oxides battery hs been founded in the year 1999 for various applications. The cathode and the anode used here is LINICoAlO2 and graphite C6.

NMC:

Lithium Nickel Manganese Cobalt Oxide battery offer a combination a nickel, cobalt and manganese. The cathode and the anode used here is LiNiMnCoO2 and graphite C6 respectively.

LFP:

Lithiu Iron Phosphate batteries are also known as Li-phosphate batteries., they use phosphates as cathode and graphites as anode.

LTO:

Lithium Titanate Oxide batteries is a type of rechargables battery. The cathode used here is LiMn2O4/LiMnCoO2 and anode is titanate respectively.

2) Compare the differences between each type of Li+ion batteries based on their characteristics.

As we have seen above there are 6 types of commonly used lithium ion batteries and they are as follows,

The subjects that can be differentiated from these types are as follows,

Nominal Voltage

Cycle

Charge Current Rate

Discharge Current Rate

Nominal Voltage:

Many batteries are very close to each other , LMO 3.7V has the large range and the LTO 2.4V has the low range.

Cycle:

The cycle of each batery are different from each other, LTO has the highest cycle and the LMO has the lowest cycle.

Chare Current Rate:

When the charge current rate is high the time battery will take less time to get charged. LTO and LFP has the highest charge current rate.

Discharge Current Rate:

We must choose a high rated battery if we want high discharge rates and faster charging. LTO has the has the discharge rates higher than the others.
