Week 1 Stress Concentration on a Plate with hole

Aim: To setup simulation for both cases as listed above and find the max deformation and Max stresses developed in the plates and to select the best

design from analysis point of view

Case I:Design a plate with a hole model similar to what we worked in the class, but with increased thickness.
Determine the maximum deformation and stress developed in the model.

The above shown plate was modeled through space claim and modeled in the ansys mechanical and Mat steel was assigned to the model

after that the model was imported in the project schematic and after this boundary conditions were asssigned to the model.

A tensile force of 500N was applied on the model in X axis as shown above

And one end of the plate was fixed as shown in the above fig

and after this simulation was run with assigned end time as 1 s,and after completing the static simulation the below reults were achieved

the Max deformaion of 0.000265 mm deformation was achived at the end were tensile force of 500 N was applied

The max von misses stres was found to be 0.56582 Mpa was acheived at centre edge of the hole and min stres was found to be 0.023527 Mpa

Case II: Designed smaller holes 90mm away from the center:

Diameter=30mm
Boundary Conditions:
Plate fixed at left face.
Load of 500N on the right face.

The plate with above characterstics was designed with small holes at 90 mm on both sides from the center

The designed plate was then further imported in the mechanical and material as well as boundary condition was assigned to the model

One end was given fixed support as shown in above fig

And the opposite end was applied a load of 500N in the negative Z direction

And after this end time of simaultion was given as 1s and the staci simulation was solved

The max deformation of 0.00465 mm was found at the end were tensile force of 500 N was applied

The Max von misses stress was found to be 0.9269 Mpa and was found at the same center edge as in above case

Result Validation of both cases

Plates Von Misses stress Deformation
Case I 0.56582 Mpa 0.000265 mm
Case II 0.9269 Mpa 0.00465 mm

From analysis point of view I will go with the case I as the there is less deformation and less stress on the plate

From Manufacturing point of view Case I is good to as is reduces machining cost

Conclusion:Hence we can conclude that stress concentration is more when the hole dia is increased, for a plate with same dimension
