Week 1 Stress Concentration on a Plate with hole

Case 1: Rectangular plate with single hole

  • Deformation:
  • Maximum stress:

Case 1: Rectangular plate with3 holes

  • Deformation
  • Maximum stress

RESULTS AND DISCUSSIONS:

  • Deformation:
    • In both the cases we can observe that the maximum deformation is observed in the end whre the force is applied. The end which is fixed has a minimum deformation.
    • Plate with three holes a higher deformation value compared to the plate with single hole.
  • Maximum stress:
    • Mximum stress is observed in the plate with single hole. In both the cases the maximum stress is observed at the center hole.

CONCLUSIONS:

  • From analysis point of view, I would select the model with higher stress value. Because, the stress value will surely help in finalizing the design. Higher the stres value, the part can bear the higher load.
  • From manufacturing point of view, I would select the part which has a simple construction. Manufacturing other two holes for a plate is surely time consuming. Unless and until the other two holes are useful for the product, I would not prefer the model with three holes.
