Challenge

Week 1 Stress Concentration on a Plate with hole

Aim

  • Design plate with hole & Determine the maximum deformation and stress on the model.

Objective

  • Design plate with hole in Ansys
  • Determining Maximum Deformation and stress on the component
  • Selection of design from Analysis standpoint of view
  • Selection of design from Manufacturing standpoint of view

Procedure

Open Ansys workbench software>>select analysis system as Static analysis>>Double click on Engineering data and select materials as steel.

Right click on Geometry and select Design Modeler it will open Modelling graphics area where we can design our design for analysis.

After Designing model assign materials as Steel and mesh with Tetrahedrons elements with elements size as 4 mm.

Fig:-Inside view of mesh

Boundary condition

Right click on static structural and select Fixed support

Right click on static structural and select Force

Result of Case-1

Case2

Import the geometry of case-1 and make two more hole on it as shown below in Design modeler.

fig:-3D modelling of plate with holes

Tetra Mesh generation

Boundary condition

Force of 500N on one face and fixed support on other face of the component as shown below

Result of Case-2

Result and Comparision:

CASE Stress Deformation
Case-1(single hole) 0.6100 MPa 0.0002818 mm
Case-2(Triple hole) 0.5811 MPa 0.0003084 mm

From the above table, The deformation in case-2 is more than case-1 because of removal of materials in case-2 whereas stresses in case-1 is more than stresses in case-2.

Selection of Design from analysis standpoint of view:

From the analysis standpoint of view, we can select case-2 because the main agenda of analysis is to reduce the stress on the component.

Selection of Design from manufacturing standpoint of view:

From the manufacturing standpoint of view. we can select case-1 because the main agenda of manufacturing is to reduce the production time.
