Week 1:- Introduction to BiW and Fixtures Challenge
- What is BIW & define its parts?
Ans:
BIW (Body in white) refers to the welded sheet metal component which form the vehicles structure to which the other
components will be married i.e, engine, chassis, exterior and interior tim.
BIW components are classified as:
1. Body slides
2. Under body
3. Clousres
4. Roof
5. Fender
2. What do you understand by BIW nomenclature?
Ans
We have standard nomenclature system for BIW components of a car named from (A-Z) in a unique category. There are two stabdard BIW nomenclature systems, UK and US.The BIW nomenclature simplifies the standard components to be mounted on the car.
3. What is fixture & its types?
Ans:
Fixture is a device which holds the work piece to the processed by using 3-2-1 principle.
welding fixtures are normally designed to hold and support the various components to be welded. It is necessary to support them in a proper location which is capable of preventing distortions in work piece during welding.
Types of fixtures:
1. Production fixtures
2. Pre-production operation fixtures
3. Checking fixtures
4. What is the basic principle of fixture design?
Ans:
For a fixture design , the major portion of design time is spent deciding how to locate the work piece in the fixture.
for any body there are total 12 degrees of freedom:
6 translational:
+X , -X
+Y , -Y
+Z , -Z
- 6 Rotational:
clockwise X and anticlockwise X
clockwise Y and anticlockwise Y
clockwise Z and anticlockwise Z
you must fix all the 12 degrees of freedom in order to locate the workpiece in the fixture. So, 12 degrees of freedom of the work piece need to be fixed and thus we cab achieve 0 degrees of freedom for the workpiece.
5.Elaborate types of BIW Stations?
Ans:
There are 4 types of BIW stations they are:
- Tools
- Grippers
- Stands
- Miscellineous
6.What are the basic terminologies used in the BIW fixture?
Ans:
- NC/Mylars/Fingers
- PLP
- Blade
- Riser
- Shims
- Rough locators
- Hardware
- CMM
- Units
- Number plate
- Co-ordinate plate
- Name plate
- Clamp arm
- Pivot
- Class A surface/skin surafce
- Sensors
- Reed switches
