Week 1:- Introduction to BiW and Fixtures Challenge
1.What is BIW & define its parts
Answer:Body in white (BIW)refers to the welded sheet metal components which forms the vechicles structure to which other components will be married ie. enginge, chassis, exterior & interior trims.
BIW parts are mainly classfied as
1)Body sides
2)Under body
3)Closures
4)Roof
5)FENDER

2.What do you understand by BIW Nomenclature
Answer:BIW is an assemble of all welded sheet metal panels as before going for priming and painting. BIW refer to the welded sheet metal structure to which other component will be married i.e. engine, chassis, exterior and interior trim.

3.What is fixture and its types
Answer:
- A Fixture is a device which holds the the work piece to be processed by using 3-2-1 principle.
- In general a welding fixture consists of number of units together to hold the components and is mounted on the base of unit.
- Welding fixture are normally designed to hold and support the various components to be welded,
- It is necessary to support them in a proper location which is cabale of preventing distortions in the workpiece during welding
- For this the locating element needed to place carefully.
- Clamping has to be light but firm
- Placement of clamping elements has tobe clear of the welding area
- Fixture has to be quite stable and rigid to withstand the welding stress
General types of BIW Fixture
- Production fixturef
- Pre Production fixture
- Checking fixture
4.What is basic principle of fixture design
Answer: 3-2-1 peinciple is the basic principle of fixture design. The major portion of design time is spent deciding how to locate the workpiece in the fixture.
- For any free body there aretotal twelve degree of freedom as below.
- 6 translation degree of freedom +X,-X,+Y,-Y,+Z,-Z
- Clockwise around X,Y,Z axis.
- Anticlockwise around X,Y,Z axis.
All the 12 degree of freedom in order to locate the workpiece in the fixture.

5.Elaborate types of BIW Stations
Answer:
Checking Stations:
- A checking station tool is a fixture which is used to check the automotive parts or assemblies, ensuring all the coordinates, relative dimensions and postions as per the tolerances.
- A checking station can be a gauge type, fixed and automated checking fixture.
- A checking gauge is a tool where workpiece is hold and various measuring gauges are introduced to ensure the dimensions and repeatability.
Grippers:
- A Gripper is a device or a fixture which holds the car Panel and is fixed to the manipulactind end of a robot or an end of an end effectors. Also known as EOAT.
- EOAT:End of arm tooling.
Types of gripper
- Material handling gripper.
- Process gripper.
- Combo gripper.
- Dual gripper.
Stand and their types:
- Gluing and sealer stand
- Docking Stand
- Date stamp stand
- Pedestal gun stand
Take out trolly: Take out trolly is used to take the car panel out of the robotic workimg cell between the cycle for inspection purpose.
6.What are the basic terminologies used in the BIW FIXTURE.
