Week 1:- Introduction to BiW and Fixtures Challenge
- Component of welded sheet metal that married with another component which forms the vehicle structure. It also does not have any paint yet, so it is mostly whites here are the parts and the example:

- bodyside = A-pillar and B- pillar.
- underbody side = main floor and engine compartment.
- closures = hood and rear door.
- roof.
- fender.
- Nomenclature is a Naming system for standardizing drawing in terms of BiW, below is the example

- A piece of equipment that holds the workpiece. there are three types of fixtures
- the production fixtures
- the fixture that is used in mass production.
- pre-production operation fixture
- categories as prototype fixtures for a feasibility study on early batch production.
- checking fixture
fixture for checking panel`s geometry dimension and tolerance.

- 3-2-1 principle is a principle that uses in designing a fixture. 3 means three dof is restricted which is z-axis, y, and x rotational axis, for example using clamp on the panel. The 2 mean two dof is restricted which is the x-axis and y-axis, for example first pin in the fixture. Finally, the 1 is the final dof restriction, which is rotational in Z-axis, for example, the second pin. the main function of this is to hold the workpieces without any distortion.

- There are four basic types of station BiW.
- tool - geo tool, re-spot tool, marriage tool
- gripper - material handling, process, combo, dual
- stands - Gluing, docking, date stamp
- miscellaneous - curing, buffer stand, takeout trolley
- Here is the basic terminology in BiW
- Shim = use for fillers
- Risers = L-structure that hold the blades in a certain height
- Blades = a structure that can be mounted by cylinder and clamp
- NC = part that holds the panel
- PLP = pin for panel locator
- Rough locators = a structure that prevents the wrong orientation of the panel on the fixture
- CMM = a machine that measures with high accuracy
- Unit = Combination of rises, blades, clamps, and cylinders
- number plate = a series of numbers to identify a unit
- Hardware = Fasteners
- Name plate = Plate that displays the detail of the fixture
- Clamp arm = structure of the clamp that can move
- reed switch = a magnetic switch that detects the movement of the cylinder for automation operation
- sensor = a device that detects an error or missing part
- pivot = axis of rotation movement
- Class A surface = a surface that is visible to the customer
- co-ordinate plate = a plate that covers the master hole from damage or distortion
