Challenge

Week 1:- Introduction to BiW and Fixtures Challenge

Aim:- Introduction to BIW and Fixtures challenge.

1.What is BIW & define its parts?

Ans:-  Defination:-   Body in white(BIW) refers to the welded sheet metal component which form the vehicle structure to which the other component will be married. i.e engine, chassis, exterior and interior trim.

The stage in automobile or automobile manufacturing in which the car body sheet metal component are been assembled by welding and by other joining process.

BIW parts mainly catrgorized as below.

                                                                                                                               BIW.

1) Body side.                               2) Under Body.                                                   3)Closure.                       3)Roof.                             4)fender

Body side outer.                            Front End under frame                                         Front Door                         Roof Inner

                                                      (Engine Compartment)

Body side inner.                            Main floor                                                            Rear Door                        Roof Outer

Rear end under frame (rear compartment)             Hood

                                                                                                                               Deck lid

2)What do you understand by BIW nomenclature?

Ans:-In nomenclature i undersatand the name of part is in UK and US meaning.

                                                                                 BIW Nomenclature.

3)What is fixture & its types?

ANS:-    Fixture:- A fixture is a device which hold the work piece to be proceed (welded) by using 3-2-1 principle.

In general a welding fixture (tool) consist of number of unit together to hold the car panel, and is mounted on a base unit.

Welding fixture are normally designed to hold and support the various component (Work Piece) to be welded. It is a necessary to support them in a proper location which is capable of preventing distortion in work pieces during welding. for this the locating element need to be placed carefully clamping has to be light but firm, placement of clamping element has to be clear of the working area and the fixture has to be quite stable and rigid to withstand the welding process.

Types of Fixture:- Below are the general type of  BIW fixture.

  • Production Fixture- Mass Production purpose
  • Pre-Production operation fixture(PPO)- For initial batch production to study the feasibility.
  •  Checking Fixture:- For Car panel.
  • Geometric inspection purpose.

4)What is the basic principle of fixture design?

Ans:-     For a fixture designer, the majior portion of design time is spent deciding how to locate the workpice in the fixture .

for any free body there are total of twelve degrees of freedom as below.

                  6 Rotation degree of freedom.

    -Clockwise around X axis (CROT-X)
    -Anticlockwise around X axis (ACROT-X)

    -Clockwise around Y axis (CROT-Y)

    -Anticlockwise around Y axis (CROT-Y)

     -Clockwise around Z axis (ACROT-Z)

     -Anticlockwise around Z axis (ACROT-Z)

5)Elaborate types of BIW Stations?

Ans:-  There are different  types of station, realated to each part.

                                                                                                                                   Assembly line

                                                                                                                                     zone

                                                                                                                                      Station

     Tools                                                                       Gripper                                                                         Stand                                                 Miscellenius

Geo tool, Resopt tool, Marrage Tool,                      Material handling gripper, process gripper,                     Pedestal stand, Gluing Stand,                 Curring, Buffer stand,Rack, Pallets, Take out trolley,

framer tool, etc                                                     combo gripper, etc                                                       Docking stand etc                                        conveyors, etc.

6)What are the basic terminologies used in the BIW fixture?
