Week 1:- Introduction to BiW and Fixtures Challenge

1. BIW means Body In White which is the welded sheet metal components which forms the vehicle structure. Body sides, Under body, Closures, Roof & fender are its parts.

2. BIW nomenclature clearly predicts the parts of a car body like Upper body , Under body , Closures, Roof & Fender.

3. Fixture is a working holding device which hold the compoenent for machining or any processes. Welding fixture, Assembly fixture, Checking fixture are some types.

4. 3-21 Priciple is the basic principle for fixture design. It is nothing but arresting 12 degrees of freedom(6 translational & 6 rotational).

5.Types of BIW stations:

a. Tools eg.Geo tool, Respot tool, Marriage tool

b. Grippers eg.Material handling gripper, Process gripper

c. Stands

d. Miscellaneous

6. Basic Terminologies in BIW fixtures:

NC Mylars, Risers, Shims, fasteners, Clamps, Blade, Pivot, Tooling pin etc.
