Challenge

Week 1:- Introduction to BiW and Fixtures Challenge

1. The stage in automotive design or automobile manufacturing in which the car body sheet metal components are been assembled by welding and by other joining process. After joining process, it is immersed in primer hence it is called body in white.

2. Body in white is divided into:-
Body sides,Under body,Closures,Roof & Fender.
Body sides are further divided into body side outer and body side inner.
Under body is divided into engine compartment, rear compartment and main floor.
Closures contains front door, rear door, hood and deck lid.
Roof has roof inner and roof outer.

3. A fixture is a device which holds the workpiece to be processed. In general a welding fixture consist of number of units together to hold the car panel and is mounted on a base unit
Types of fixture-pre production fixtures which are used of feasibility study ,after which comes the production fixtures for producing parts for mass production then the final fixtures comes i.e checking fixture to control the quality of parts.

4. The main function is to hold the workpiece such that there is no movement in the workpiece even if other operations are performed on it.The fixture should allow the movement of workpiece i.e loading and unloading ,and it should not damage the workpiece as in case of to tightly held workpieces. It is necesary to hold and support them in proper location to prevent distortion at the time of welding.it should allow the welding gun access.3-2-1 principle should be used while designing of a fixture.

5.A station consists of number of tools, grippers, stands etc.in which the loose panels are processed to join together to a sub assembly. The sub assembly will be taken to the next station on to which some other loose panels will get joined to form another assembly.
Tools-geo tool,re spot tool,marriage tool,framer
Grippers-material handeling gripper,process gripper
Stands-pedestal stand,gluingstand,docking stand
Misellaneous-buffer stand racks,take out trolleys
