Week 1: Channel flow simulation using CONVERGE CFD

Objective:

To simulate channel flow using converge CFD.

Case Setup:

1) A geometry for the channel flow is created using converge studio.

2) The necessary boundary conditions are defined.

3)The necessary steps are then followed in setting up the case where materials, simulation parameters, initial conditions, physical models etc are all specified.

4) Base gride sizes are also specified

The geometry is created using the create & box geometry option. The dimensions are as follows:

X: 0.1m Y:0.01m Z:0.01m.Center-0.05m

The boundary conditions are applied to the surfaces as follows:

The Top and Bottom suffaces are given as Wall with a no slip boumdary condition.

Inlet :

Pressure:100001Pa

Outlet :

Pressure:100000Pa

The front and back faces are given a 2D boundary condition.

The material is chosen as air with a composition O2=0.23 and N2=0.77

Three different grid sizes are taken

Case 1:

Base Grid size - dx-2e-4 dy-2e-4 dz-2e-4

Case 2:

Base Grid size- dx-1.5e-4 dy-1.5e-4 dz-1.5e-4

Case 3:

Base Grid size dx-1.2e-4 dy-1.2e-4 dz-1.2e-4

Conclusion

  • In the above contours the parabolic nature of flow can be seen. The contours get smoother as the mesh is finer.
