Underbody Coating

Underbody Coating – Definition & Purpose

What is Underbody Coating?

Underbody coating is a protective layer applied to the sheet metal undercarriage of a car. The coating is typically made from a thick, rubberized material that adheres to the metal and helps to prevent corrosion and damage caused by road debris, salt, and other environmental factors.

The coating serves as a barrier against environmental factors such as moisture, dirt, salt, and other debris that can cause rust and corrosion to the car's undercarriage. Typically, underbody coating dimensions depend on the size and shape of the car's undercarriage.

What is the purpose of Underbody Coating?

The primary purpose of underbody coating is to protect the car's undercarriage from corrosion. Corrosion is a major problem for cars, particularly in areas where salt is used to melt ice on the roads. Over time, the salt and other corrosive elements can eat away at the metal of the undercarriage, leading to rust and other damage that can compromise the structural integrity of the car. Its purpose is to increase the lifespan of a car by preventing rust and corrosion. Rust and corrosion can lead to structural damage and decrease the resale value of a car.

Types:

The types of underbody coating are,

  1. Rubberized underbody coating
  2. Wax based underbody coating
  3. Asphalt based Automotive underbody coating
  4. Polyurethane underbody coating

Let’s see them in detail,

Rubberized underbody coating

The underbody coating of this type is rubberized. This preserves the underbody well by protecting it from the scratches

Wax Based underbody coating

As the name suggests this underbody coating is based on wax. Even though this type of coating wears off in few months, they are well resistant against the moisture and affordable compared to other type of coating

Asphalt based automotive underbody coating

Compared to rubberized coating, Asphalt based coating provides a wider range of protection and they are generally recommended for LMVs.

Polyurethane Underbody coating

This type of coating is well recommended for high protection against corrosion and can be easily bonded with metals

Pros of underbody coating:

  1. Resistance against corrosion
  2. Noise absorption
  1. Reinforcement
  2. Car’s life is extended

Cons:

  1. Can’t be used on already used vehicle.
  2. Adds weight to the vehicle
  3. An underbody coating is not immune to damage
  4. It must be reapplied again after 3 to 5 years, so this underbody coating is not permanent
