Underbody Coating

Requirement - To make a detailed report explaining about underbody coating, its types and its advantages & disadvantages by adding relevant images.

Underbody coating - Underbody coating provides long term protection from corrosion to cars underbody. It also protects part like body panel, frame rail and other inner cavities that are not physically accessible but are prone to corrosion. Its mostly comes contact with substances such as muddy water, chemicals sunch as salt, dirt, ice and debris from road.protective coating is used to protect the vehicle chasis from external enviroment.

Underbody coating is usually dense cladding applied uniformly to the under carriage of the automobile .Nornally painted/sprayed on when the car is just out of the dealership and is clean. It may also use in old cars, its protect furthe damage of parts.Rubberized paint that forms 3-4 mm thick coating all along the underside of the car when sprayed on.

Types of underbody coating -

.E-coating

E-coating is mostly as electrocoating,is a type of wet paint finish process meant to protect metals & steels from corroding. The types of metals can range from car parts,hardware,etc..Electrocoating is usually done by the vehicle manufacturer as it done on the bare body/BIW of the vehicle. As the name says electric current is used to apply the coating. The e-coat bath consists of 80-90% deionized water and 10-20% paints solids. The deionized water acts as a carrier for the piant solids, which are under constant agitation.

. Rubberized undercoating

Rubberized underbody coating means a coating applied to the wheel wells, the inside of door panels/fenders,the underside of a trunk or hood, underside of the vehicle itself for the purpose of sound deadening & protection. Its contains fibreglass, ceramics, rubber and silicon. And protects coated items against mosture, acids, abrasion, corrosion etc. Thickness 2-3 mm.

. Polyurethane undercoating

Essentially, pollyurethane coating is a liquid plastic which dries to form a paint like film on an underlaying substance or layer, polyurethane paint provides durability ,resistance to chemicals, water, abrasion & temperature,as well as an attractive glossy finish.

The coating closes up splits & fractures on the underbody of the vehicle. It offers up good protection against corrosion and also bonds with the metal.Unlike in the case of asphalt based coating.

. Wax/paraffin based undercoating

A paraffin-based undercoating will be the cheapest and quickest opting avilable with which to protect the undercarriage of the vehicle. However keep in mind that it will wear off quicker than other types of undercoatings and will need to be stripped and reapplied as at least once every year, wax based under coating never truly hardned.During application, they flow into seams and cracks to provide protective properly. They are usually avilable in a spray gun or in a aerosol.Offers at least a base protection in moderately humid climates.

. Asphalt based undercoating

Asphalt undercoating is manufactued from 100% asphalt which works great to repel water & moisture as trapped moisture is leading cause of corrosion.Best applied to inner pannels, door frames, trunk area, floor pans or where ever there is moisture concentration.

This undercoating does provide some benefits over waxed based undercoating. They both stick well to mostly any surfaces and do a great job sealing out moisture, road chemical and oxygen. It also has the benefit of being less expensive.

Underbody coating advantages-

. Protects againt rust & corrosion

Underbody coating is the sprayed application of a wax or rubber-based composite onto the entire underside of the vehicle. Its designed to create a rust proof layer between the underside of the vehicle and the muddy water, ice, salt of the road.Undercoating provides a more comprehensive protective layer for your vehicle.

. Reinforcement

If a car comes with stock underbody coating, using another coating on top of it,its not going to hurt.It will offer additional reinforcement ,protecting the underbody from water, road debris, gravel & small pebbles. There would also be a lesser chance for the factory coat to flake away.

. Prolong cars life

Good undercoating not only defends the underbody from corrosion but also protect the engine and transmission as well.Less rusting coupled with slower wear & tear can suerly add years to the life span of your vehicle.

. Anti-chipping property

When a car underbody faces hit from stone chips or anything from road its must be protected by a thick layer of protection to prevent the same. This will be achived through underbody coating.

. Heat insulation

Heat insulation insulates the interior of the car from extreme temparature from beneath the vehicle providing a comfortable cabin experience.

.Reduces NVH(noise vibration harshness)

A thick undercoating can soften the noise that reach the cabin. As the undercoating is often made up of rubber it absorbs some of the rackets. It minimizes the sound from underneath the acr resulting a noiseless, smooth, driving exp.

.Protects vital component

Underneath a car is somewhere a lot of indispensable parts of a car are left exposed like the engine, silencer etc. one simply cant afford to let these parts go bad due to rusting and hence in order to save yourself from a hefty repair bill,a considerably less expensive anti-rust coating is a must.

Underbody coating Disadvantages-

. Add weight - Although the most layering of underbody coating is in microns but underbody coating may add some minimal amt. of weight to the vehicles body.

. Failed to protect existed rust

For an undercoating to be the most effective ,it should be in place before the underbelly of your car begins to rust.If you apply it over corrosion, you will still isolate the metal from further moisture and airflow, which is good, but the existing oxidizing/rusting process will still continue to occur.

. High cost - Appling underbody coating on a vehicle can be expensive.

.Damage risk- There can be chances of risk of damage during application, that the coating should be applied carefully otherwise the coatng can get into moving parts such as cv-joint in propeller shafts and can cause faliure of the pats.

.Reapplication required - After a certain period it will be futher re-apply.

Conclusion - As a final conclution we can say that underbody coating is a must to make sure the underbody is a layer of protection from all grime and grit & once a year clean & touch up required.
