Underbody Coating
UNDERBODY COATING :-
- it is the form of coating which is sprayable and sprayed on underbody part of the vehicle.
- since the under body of the vehicle is mostly made of steel and metals which are susceptible to rusting and corrosion.
- while we are on the driving seat we enjoy the smooth ride unaware of the fact that our vehicle's underbody is exposed to mud , water, potholes , rugged roads , stones etc which can often leads to wear and tear of the underbody easily.
- different parts in the underbody requires different thickness of coating.
- there are lot of impacts and effects that the underbody of the vehicle has to suffer :- environmental conditition vibrations and sounds cold and heat conditions presence of oxidizing agents
so to deal with this condition like corrosion and rusting and to provide long term protection of the vehicle , the underbody coating is done

this is cars underbody part which is half coated.

this is underbody coating.
PURPOSE :-
- to protect against rust and corrosion
- to prevent paint chipping
- to reduce noice and vibration
- to provide insulation
- to increase life of vehicle
- to seal any seams
PROCESS : -
- remove the rust completely through sand blasting or sanding
- give it a quick rinse and let it dry
- use a spray gun to coat
- minimum two coats must be applied
- let the undercoating cure completely.
TYPES :-
- Asphalt based automotive undercoating :- Asphalts consists of compounds of hydrogen and carbon with minor proportions of nitrogen , sulphur, and oxygen. It is a petroleum residue . it is viscous . It is not paintable . As it does applied with a little bit of rubberized material that sets up firmly and helps in noise reduction.
This type of undercoating provides durability against stone chips, rocks , chemicals and moisture. It can be used for large trucks and heavy machinery . It is less expensive - Wax based under body coating it is a paraffin based undercoating. It will wear off quickly. So it is needed to be stripped and reapplied once a year atleast. It is cheapest . It never truly hardens . Gives basic protection in humid climates.
- Rubberized underbody coating It is easy to apply and offers sound cushioning, it dries to a soft rubbery finish that prevents further rust. This coating can be painted over. it can easily be removed as well
- Polyurethane underbody coating this contains carbamate links . it is a type of plastic polymer, fibrous and resinous. It is quick and easy to apply. It sands quickly . This seeps into crack and seams it can be painted over. it needs some preparation of surface to apply, that to sand and applying an etching primor to metals which are bare.
PROS :-
- Fights rust - if you live near a sea or have a humid environment where corrosion emerges quickly . The underbody coating can prevent rusting and corrosion. Also if we live where it snows . The water is an oxidizing agent . There also it is important to have underbody coating
- Minimizes Sound - it also repels and doesn't allows the sound and vibration to enter inside the vehicle. it reduces the noise by absorbing the effect .
- Heat insulation - the thick coating doesn't lets the heat conduction and gets the vehicle insulated
- Anti- chipping property - The dust contains small gravels , stones and rocks which hits the underbody part of the vehicle with immense pressure and force . Thus the paint and metal parts are badly effected with sometimes having the thin coat chipping off and wear . If the vehicle mostly runs on a dusty path with gravels. So there it becomes necessary to have a underbody coating of high thickness.
CONS :-
- Corrosion - Underbody coating will not help in corrosion that already exists and the corrosion needs to be removed first before it is applied which can be expensive ,it also adds weight to the vehicle
- Expensive & ephimeral - it must be reapplied every two to three years for the best results, which makes the overall maintenance of the car expensive
- Damage - it is not impervious to damage. That the vehicle is prone to get damaged
