Underbody Coating

UNDERBODY COATING :

It is a process in which the BiW is dipped in the paint bath for Electrolyte deposition. The BiW is carried by rails and dipped, the inclination angle & time for the ED bath is determined by the weight and facility of the plant.

The angle at which BiW rotates is the angle where all the ED droplets are let out, there cannot be any deposition of ED droplets in the BiW.

The better ED coating you give, the better paint absorbption & more corrosion resistant your car will be. After ED bath the BiW comes to primer region it is kind of preliminary coating for the car and after this paint process will be under gone.

TYPES OF UNDERBODY COATING :

1. Rubberized Undercoating : It offers sound cushioning as well as protection from dust moisture & dents. The coating can be painted over & if necessary for body work the undercoating can be easily removed using undercoating removal spray.

2. Polyurethane Undercoating : For this undercoating polyurethane based sealent is used, it is quicker & easier to apply. This sealent works by seeping into all the cracks & seams, displacing salts and moisture. This type of undercoating generally requires surface preparation before applying.

3. Paraffin Based Undercoating : It is the cheapest and quickest option to protect the under carraige of the vehicle. However this wears out quicker than other types of undercoating. Wax based undercoating never truely harden, during application they flow into cracks & seams to provide protective properties.

4. Asphalt Based Undercoating : For large trucks & heavy machinery Asphalt based undercoating provides extra protection from rocks & moisture. It is not paintable, making it best only for the undercarraige coating.

PROS OF UNDERBODY COATING :

  • It provides protection to the carraige of the vehicle.
  • Undercoating gives an extra layer of protection against rust & corrosion to the vehicle.
  • Undercoating will eventually wear out but we can get years of protection from it.

CONS OF UNDERBODY COATING :

  • Undercoating will work best only on new vehicles.
  • Undercoating will not work if the corrosion already exists.
  • Before applying undercoating corrosion needs to be removed which is an expensive process.
