Underbody Coating
Underbody Coating: It is the coating process that takes place after the Assembly process of Sheet Metal BIW is created, to make it anti-corrosion that improves car performance. BIW after the assembly section is left with welding residues or remaining oil, which is cleaned by the Pretreatment process.
The Pre-Treatment BIW is dipped into ED Coating and rotated at a certain angle such that all the ED Droplets left the BIW in the end. The adhesion of paint to stick to the BIW depends on the ED Coating, So the better the ED Coating the better will be the anti-corrosion effect and performance of BIW.
After the ED Coating is done it goes through the heating chamber to make the BIW heat and dry by removing the remaining droplets. Dried BIW is then sent to the primary coating that forms the first layer of the coating process. After the underbody sealant areas are coated which is the important process called underbody coating, sometimes all the spot welding regions are closed by sealants. depending on the cost of the cars you get these features.
After this, the painting process is performed on BIW and sent to the inspection chamber where rooms are filled with bright lights to check the quality of the painting. This is the Underbody Coating process is done in OEM companies.
Depending on the materials used in the coating process and the cost they are categorized into the following.
Rubberized underbody Coating: It is easy to apply and use as a sound cushion as well as prevent corrosion and moisture.
Polyutherane underbody Coating: It is quicker to apply and often comes in a can to preload to the application gun. the surface preparation is required for the application.
Wax underbody Coating: It is the cheapest and quickest process available in the market. But lasts only for a year.
Asphalt Underbody Coating: It is the coating used for protection against rock chips and moisture. and also helps to the reduction of noise.
Pros of Underbody Coating:
It provides a layer of protection against corrosion.
It extends the life of the vehicle.
It can be applied to damaged areas
It can reduce the interior noise
Cons of the underbody Coating:
It is less helpful if corrosion is already present
It adds weight to the vehicle
It must reapply every 3 - 4 years for the best results
